Outraged stars are calling out Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass and California Governor Gavin Newsom as devastating wildfires rip through the city’s upscale neighborhoods, following budget cuts to the fire department last year.
A slew of celebrities has taken to Instagram and X (formerly Twitter) to criticize Bass as the “apocalyptic” infernos consume areas like the Pacific Palisades, forcing thousands to flee their homes overnight.
Yet chaos erupted when the main roadway into and out of the affluent neighborhood became jammed. Frantic residents abandoned their vehicles to escape on foot.
Actress Sarah Michelle Gellar didn’t hold back, venting on Instagram, “City of LA you want everyone to evacuate yet you have complete gridlock and not one traffic cop on the roads helping.”

The backlash comes as Bass faces criticism for skipping town during the crisis. She flew to Ghana to attend a presidential inauguration, despite advanced warnings from meteorologists that critical weather conditions would fuel the fires.
Actress Sara Foster blasted Bass’ policies in a fiery post on X, writing, “We pay the highest taxes in California. Our fire hydrants were empty. Our vegetation overgrown, brush not cleared.”
“Our reservoirs were emptied by our governor because tribal leaders wanted to save fish. Our fire department budget was cut by our mayor,” she continued. “But thank god drug addicts are getting their drug kits. RESIGN. Your far-left policies have ruined our state. And also our party.”

Actor James Woods also derided Bass on X, holding her and Newsom responsible for mismanaging fire risks. His home was among those destroyed by the flames.
“This fire is not from ‘climate change,’ you ignorant asshole. It’s because liberal idiots like you elect liberal idiots like Gavin Newsom and Karen Bass,” he wrote.
“One doesn’t understand the first thing about fire management and the other can’t fill the water reservoirs,” he fumed.
Bass stayed stunningly silent about her role in the disaster amid backlash from journalists during a press conference.
This is the most damning video of a politician being questioned during a disaster that I’ve ever seen. This @SkyNews reporter just absolutely shredded the incompetent Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass. It’s truly a work of art. 👏👏👏pic.twitter.com/goqy5tXlbm

A Sky News reporter confronted her, asking, “Do you owe citizens an apology for being absent while their homes were burning? Do you regret cutting the fire department’s budget by millions of dollars, Madam Mayor? Have you nothing to say today?”
Even as the reporter pressed, adding, “Elon Musk says that you’re utterly incompetent. Are you reconsidering your position?” Bass refused to respond, standing silent for nearly a minute before walking away.
An internal memo from L.A. Fire Chief Kristin Crowley warned Bass last December that cutting nearly $18 million from the department’s budget would severely limit its wildfire response capabilities.
The firefighters risking their lives to saves our homes deserve the highest praise and gratitude. The politicians who deprived them of the means to do their job, and literally left them using purses to quell the conflagration should be in prison. pic.twitter.com/f8HT7IrNlY

“Without this funding, pilot compliance and readiness are jeopardized, and aerial firefighting capabilities are diminished,” Crowley wrote in the memo, presented to the Board of Fire Commissioners last month.
Former “Dancing with the Stars” pro Valentin Chmerkovskiy echoed the outrage on Instagram, slamming the state’s infrastructure failures.
“5th largest economy on the planet. Firefighters didn’t have enough water pressure to do their job?! Are you joking me?! The taxes we pay for 3rd world infrastructure is unbelievable?! Come on.”
Meanwhile, President-elect Donald Trump joined the chorus of criticism, blaming Newsom’s environmental policies for exacerbating the disaster.
“Governor Gavin Newscum refused to sign the water restoration declaration put before him that would have allowed millions of gallons of water, from excess rain and snow melt from the North, to flow daily into many parts of California, including the areas that are currently burning in a virtually apocalyptic way,” Trump vented on Truth Social.
He added, “He wanted to protect an essentially worthless fish called a smelt, by giving it less water (it didn’t work!), but didn’t care about the people of California. Now the ultimate price is being paid.”
Trump promised action when in office, proclaiming, “I will demand that this incompetent governor allow beautiful, clean, fresh water to FLOW INTO CALIFORNIA!”
Newsom, visibly distraught, lashed back at Trump after the Republican accused him of “criminal negligence.”

Speaking to Anderson Cooper, Newsom commented, “People are literally fleeing. People have lost their lives. Kids lost their schools, families completely torn asunder, churches burned down.”
Newsom argued against politicizing the tragedy, saying, “I stood next to a President of the United States of America today, and I was proud to be with Joe Biden. And he had the backs of every single person in this community. He didn’t play politics, didn’t try to divide any of us.”
Amid the devastation, actor Dennis Quaid praised the firefighters on the front line for saving his home, along with those of his neighbors.
“I can’t say enough about the firefighters who have been here; they’ve really made the difference, they’re the guys running in when everybody else is running out,” Quaid shared during a Fox News interview.

Quaid described the wildfire as the worst he’d experienced in his 45 years in California. Smoke engulfed his neighborhood within moments, forcing residents into action.
Still, Quaid didn’t shy away from addressing broader infrastructure issues, adding, “This has been a problem here in California, just an inherent problem in California … But, no water, no water in the Palisades, the infrastructure has been a big problem around here and where we should spend the money.”
Actor Zachary Levi likened the devestating wildfires to a “post-apocalyptic war film” and laid the blame squarely on California’s leadership.
“This is just incredible mismanagement, incredibly poor leadership. I would go so far as to saying that it’s criminally negligent,” Levi shared during an appearance on Fox News.

Levi rattled off the history of worsening wildfires under Newsom’s leadership, stating, “They’re doing essentially not just nothing but worse than nothing, when firefighter budgets are being cut, when they are specifically, intentionally not doing the work that could be done to avoid these problems or to be able to effectively serve them when they are happening.”
He questioned the motives behind the apparent inaction, saying, “I have no idea why they are doing or not doing the things that they are doing. But they must be held responsible. This is not good leadership.”
