HBO late-night host Bill Maher tore into ultra left-wing actor Rob Reiner during a heated exchange on his podcast, accusing Democrats of sabotaging themselves by refusing to engage with Republicans.
The back-and-forth came just days after the shocking assassination of Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk, which Maher said only highlighted the dangers of a political culture where one side refuses to even have a conversation.
“This would make some sense for the Democrats if they had any power,” Maher told Reiner on the Sept. 15 episode of “Club Random with Bill Maher.”
“But the idea of ‘we don’t talk to you when we don’t even have the power?’ Of course you have to talk to people.”

Reiner resisted the notion insisting that Democrats should only engage with Republicans if they first “agree on certain facts.”
“You’re right. But here’s the thing,” the aging director began. “Let’s say we’re going to have that argument.”
“You’re going to try to talk to somebody and you have a point of view. The other person has a point of view. Before you have the exchange, you have to agree on certain facts,” Reiner said.

Maher wasn’t having it. “No, you don’t. You can’t … You just have to talk to people,” he fired back.
Reiner tried to illustrate his point, saying, “If somebody says 2+2 is four and the other guy says no it’s not, how do you begin the discussion?”
But Maher called Reiner’s logic “a slippery slope” at best. “If you start down that road of, ‘I can’t talk to you if you believe this crazy thing’ — you just can’t!” he insisted.
Maher compared the current climate to a marriage that is on the rocks, saying that sometimes the best thing to do was walk away from heated disputes.
“Every fiber of your being wants to be like, ‘I got to get this person to not see it that way, ‘cause I just think it’s f**king nuts,’” he explained.
“And if you want that relationship to last, you’re gonna have to learn the three little words that are most important to any relationship, and they’re not ‘I love you.’ They’re, ‘Let it go.’”
The comedian went on to blast Democrats for failing to connect with voters on key cultural and policy issues.
“Like the border, like DEI was out of control, colleges, completely out of control. Elite universities, where the kids are raised to be these anarchists, America-hating anti-Semites, and there is zero diversity of opinion,” Maher said.

“The hypocrisy of ‘Diversity is the greatest thing in the world’ except of what we think, where it’s also very important.”
Maher also drew attention to how Democrats lost ground with voters by refusing to confront controversial issues.
“The right-wingers, say what you want about them, but they talk to you,” Maher said on his podcast’s previous episode.

“The left really has much more of a ‘I don’t talk to you, I don’t want to deal with you, you’re deplorable, I can’t break bread with you,’ that attitude,” he added. “All the right-wingers, they don’t have that attitude.”
He became visibly emotional when discussing the murder of Charlie Kirk, who had been a recent guest on his podcast in the Spring.
“I might drink a little more than usual today because, I mean, I don’t know when this is airing, but this is a shit day ’cause a guy who sat there, Charlie Kirk, got shot today,” Maher said. “And I can’t stop thinking about it.”

Kirk had appeared on “Club Random” in April, where he and Maher had found rare common ground on the issue of biological men competing in women’s sports.
Kirk said Maher was “a liberal that acknowledges male-female distinctions,” and Maher himself admitted, “Of all the low-lying fruit that the Democrats just like hand the Republicans to win elections, that’s the one.”

Kirk joked that Democrats were simply handing Republicans victories by refusing to budge on the issue.
“I said, ‘Are they really going to just let us win every national election on this no men in female sports thing? Like, they can’t surrender on this one issue,’” Kirk recalled.
Maher then took aim at Hollywood, accusing the entertainment industry of cowardice for ignoring Kirk’s death at the Emmy Awards just four days after the shooting.
“Would it have killed someone to get up there, since they all want to talk about their politics… just to say we had a political assassination this week and that’s wrong,” Maher said.

“They would have been booed off the stage because he was on the wrong team,” he acknowledged. “So you’re not even allowed to say that.”
He also pointed out the hypocrisy of liberal Hollywood during the segment.
“Could you imagine if a left-wing person was assassinated that week?” Maher asked. “The whole show would have been about that.”
During his HBO program “Real Time,” Maher also blasted those comparing President Donald Trump to Adolf Hitler, saying that kind of rhetoric made political violence easier to justify.
Trump went out to dinner, and people started to gather around him, chanting, "You're the Hitler of our time!" He's not Hitler, and calling somebody Hitler just makes it a lot easier to justify things like assassination. Let's put that shit away. pic.twitter.com/EiRCCQSidm

“He’s not Hitler, okay, an insult to everybody in the Holocaust to begin with. Second of all, calling somebody Hitler makes it a lot easier to justify things like assassinations. Let’s put a shitload of that away, shall we?” Maher said.
Maher added that while Trump’s own sharp rhetoric left him open to criticism, “calling somebody Hitler makes it a lot easier to justify things like assassinations.”
