Monty Python star John Cleese took serious heat online after posting a list of ways that Nazi dictator Adolf Hitler was “preferable” to former President Donald Trump.
Cleese made the post on X, formerly Twitter, the day after Christmas, captioning it: “Five ways that Hitler was preferable to Trump.”
The A Fish Called Wanda star proceeded to list out the insane reasons he came up with.
The worst of them was clearly the first, which stated that Hitler “fought for his country,” by starting the second World War.
Five ways that Hitler was preferable to Trump
1. He fought for his country
2. He never used a teleprompter
3. He was nice to dogs
4. He wrote his own books
5. He never played golf
6. He wasn't a big fat slobFive ways Trump is preferable to Hitler

Cleese’s other reasons he views Hitler more favorably than the ex-president are even more ridiculous.
“He has never used a teleprompter,” the comedian wrote. “He was nice to dogs. He wrote his own books.”
The fifth way he said Hitler is preferable to Trump is that the Nazi “never played golf,” but Cleese didn’t stop there.
He made a sixth addition to the ways he listed that the dictator supposedly trumped Trump, which stated that “he wasn’t a big fat slob.”
Cleese also attempted to come up with a list of five ways “Trump is preferable to Hitler,” but was only able to muster up two:
“He doesn’t practice genocide,” he wrote. “He has nice hair.”
The British comedian received plenty of negative feedback from X users for his post.
“Noticed you didn’t write this in German, you’re welcome,” replied Dr. Richard Harambe.
“The not practicing genocide one seems important,” someone pointed out.

“A Brit championing Hitler over Trump. Might be time for a visit to Normandy,” added former nuclear football carrier Buzz Patterson.
“Wow what a bummer looks like there’s going to be a bunch of Monty Python bacon extra crispy in the future,” actor Stephen Baldwin said in reference to a famed Monty Python Spam skit.
“What it must feel like for you everyday staring into the abyss?”
Because I've never tried to amuse the simple-minded
There are plenty of comics who do, and you will enjoy them https://t.co/07OjyVdF6c

While some commenters were quick to jump to Cleese’s defense over his “joke.”
“Regardless of being a Trump-lover or a Trump-hater, this was funny,” someone wrote.
“And John, besides being a great comedian, reached an age and status where he couldn’t care less about what people think. And that’s amazing.”
Some people thought it was very funny

“Guys. John is a comedian. This is meant to be a joke,” another chimed in.
Cleese seemingly reveled in aggravating those who were offended by his post, and spent much of the day after Christmas trolling them.
“Walking on thin ice there Mr. Cleese,” one person stated.

“That’s the jester’s job,” he replied back.
“It seems like you’re saying that you prefer Hitler to Trump, fyi,” someone else responded to his tweet.
“The literal minded are always with us,” he insulted. “It’s a shame because they miss so much.”

“I mean the genocide one sorta brazenly overshadows all of the first list, doesn’t it,” one person questioned.
“Ah! You spotted the weakness in my thinking,” he retorted. “Really smart…”
“Your best days in comedy are obviously behind you,” another added.
“At the age of 84 I should hope so,” he snarked back. “Boom,” comedian Ben Stiller commented on his reply.
Cleese seemed to revel in the chaos he caused online. In a follow-up post he wrote:
“I would like to apologize for my last tweet. It was a very bad joke, especially on Boxing Day.”

Cleese is no stranger to making controversial comments about Trump.
Earlier this year, he enraged the British on the day of King Charles coronation in May, when he made a reference to Trump.
While the King was being crowned, the entire United Kingdom was asked to recite a pledge of allegiance to the new monarch.
“I do swear that I will be faithful and bear true allegiance to His Majesty King Charles, his heirs and successors, according to law. So help me God,” they were supposed to state.
Cleese took to social media to express his distaste for the practice, and got a jab in at Trump while he did it.
“The pledge of allegiance idea would certainly please Donald Trump,” he posted. “But, since we no longer live in a feudal society, our pledge of allegiance should be to the Rule of Law, not to an individual.”
