‘Designated Survivor’ Star Dead At 42

Designated Survivor star Adan Canto passed away at the young age of 42 on Monday.

The multi-hyphenate star, who pivoted from a thriving music career in Mexico to pursue work as an actor, lost his battle with appendiceal cancer, which he had not made public prior to his death.

Born in Ciudad Acuña, Coahuila, Mexico, and raised in Texas, Canto left his hometown at 16 to pursue a career as a singer and guitarist in Mexico City.

For five years, toured as the lead singer of Del Canto, a jazz band, while producing songs for film and television.

He returned to the U.S. to play a for a major role in Kevin Williamson’s 2013 series, The Following, which stared Kevin Bacon as an FBI agent trying to catch a cult leading serial killer.

Canto followed the dramatic role with a comedy, Mixology, which was executive produced by Ryan Seacrest for ABC, then moved on to the silver screen in 2014’s X-Men: Days of Future Past.

“I don’t have the words just yet…. but my dear sweet friend Adan just gained his wings. Forever, forever in my heart,” X-Men co-star Halle Berry posted on Instagram.

The actor was most well known for his role Chief of Staff turned Vice President-elect Aaron Shore in the Netflix series Designated Survivor, starring alongside Kiefer Sutherland, Kal Penn, and Italia Ricci.

“He was such a wonderful spirit,” Sutherland wrote about the late actor on Instagram. “As an actor his desire to do well, to be great, and then do better, was truly impressive and he will be greatly missed.”

“I am also heartbroken for his wife, Steph and his two young children,” he added. “Adan, may you rest in peace.”

Penn shared a series of images of from the set of their show, which he captioned: “Absolutely heartbreaking to lose Adan Canto.”

“He was so genuine and warm, immensely talented; such a good person who was simultaneously calm and motivating,” the Van Wilder star penned. “And funny. He was very, very funny.”

Ricci also shared a carousel of photos of Canto and other cast members on the social media platform.

“I’m completely lost for words,” she wrote. “He was the strongest person I know in every sense of the word and I am so angry that this happened.”

“No one deserved this less than this sweet, brilliant, kind, and gentle man,” Ricci added.

In recent years, Canto played the role of gangster Arman Morales on The Cleaning Lady, starring alongside Élodie Yung.

Season 3 of the series began filming in December after the end of the actor and writer strikes, but Canto could not make it to set. He was still expected to film episodes for the season prior to his passing.

According to Deadline, Canto is survived by his wife, Stephanie Ann Canto, and their two young children, Roman Alder (3) and Eve Josephine (1).

What is appendiceal cancer?

According to the National Cancer Institute, appendiceal cancer originates from cells in the appendix, a small abdominal tissue pouch.

The appendix is an integral part of the intestines and colon, responsible for nutrient absorption and waste removal.

Although the exact function of the appendix is unknown, it may aid the immune system. There are two primary types of appendiceal cancer: epithelial and neuroendocrine.

When the appendix ruptures, appendiceal cancer can directly spread to various abdominal regions. On rare occasions, it can also metastasize to areas beyond the abdomen through lymph nodes.

How is appendiceal cancer diagnosed and treated?

Appendiceal cancer often manifests without symptoms in its early stages. However, as the tumor grows, individuals may experience pain, nausea, vomiting, and notice a mass in their abdomen.

Diagnosis commonly occurs when the appendix is removed under the presumption of appendicitis.

Treatment options consist of surgical removal of the appendix and any affected organs affected by the cancer, along with chemotherapy to eliminate cancer cells.

What is the prognosis for appendiceal cancer?

The 5-year survival rate for neuroendocrine tumors of the appendix and other low-grade tumors ranges from 67% to 97%.

For advanced appendiceal cancer or cancer that has spread to other areas of the body, the 5-year survival rate can significantly decrease.
