Sean Penn has thrown his unwavering support behind President Joe Biden after the president made history by granting a sweeping pardon to his son, Hunter Biden, covering over a decade of alleged legal infractions.
The decision comes despite Biden’s prior assurances to steer clear of issuing a pardon and his declaration that “no one is above the law.”
Penn credited the pardon to broader political circumstances, specifically the impending return of Donald Trump’s administration.
Speaking to Variety, Penn noted, “I do not believe that Joe Biden, had he won the presidency, would have pardoned his son.”

“I don’t think it was a lie; I think it was a change of mind and circumstance,” he told the outlet.
Describing the move as a father’s natural instinct, the Academy Award-winning actor made it clear he supports the president wholeheartedly.
“Any father that didn’t do that would have been remiss,” he claimed, adding, “I don’t know if I want to have a beer with somebody who wouldn’t have pardoned Hunter Biden, being their son.”
Further, Penn encouraged President Biden to leverage his remaining time in office to issue pardons extensively.

“It ain’t January yet,” Penn observed. “[So] I hope that it is also in President Biden’s intentions to [offer] an ongoing concerted focus on people who have been wrongfully charged, overcharged, where the extenuating circumstances have not been fairly considered, and that there will be many more pardons that are better for the world than leaving people to toil in prison.”
The Hollywood actor minced no words when describing the charges brought against Hunter as one of the most “one of the horrible hit jobs of all time” he’d encountered.
Specifically citing the firearms and tax-related accusations, Penn criticized both their intensity and precedent, dubbing the prosecution as “existential insanity.”

“In part because I am close with him, I have studied the case,” Penn added. “And while there are technicalities within one of the cases that are associated with illegality, there is almost no precedent at all for the aggression with which he was charged.”
The actor went on to praise Hunter, calling the former crackhead “one of the finest people I know.”
“This is a guy who has taken on the most severe addiction, and has so much to offer people who are suffering or families who are suffering through that,” he continued.
“No. No. It’s a no. It will always be a no. Biden will not pardon his son Hunter.”

“I’m glad that the possibility is there now that he’ll have the time and space to be able to offer that support to people, which I know is what he wants to do.”
Hunter Biden, now the first child of a sitting president to receive a presidential pardon, was previously convicted of three felony charges in connection with falsely stating his firearms eligibility while battling drug addiction in 2018.
Before the pardon, he was set to face sentencing for these charges and additional tax evasion allegations later in December. Without the pardon, he could’ve faced significant prison time.

The pardon, which spans an 11-year period beginning in 2014, absolves Hunter of any alleged crime committed—or potentially committed—during that time.
Variety further reported that Penn voiced concerns about the incoming Trump administration, referring to it as “a dangerous clown show.”
Separately, the actor stirred more controversy during an appearance at the Marrakech Film Festival on Tuesday.

Penn took aim at the Academy Awards, accusing the institution of “limiting different cultural expressions.”
“The Academy have exercised really extraordinary cowardice when it comes to being part of the bigger world of expression, and in fact, have largely been part of limiting the imagination and very limiting of different cultural expressions,” he remarked.
The fiery actor used the platform to express his endorsement for the controversial Trump biopic, “The Apprentice,” which chronicles Donald Trump’s rise during the 1970s and examines relationships pivotal to his early career.
The film features Sebastian Stan as Trump, Maria Bakalova as Ivana Trump, and Jeremy Strong portraying Roy Cohn.
“It’s jaw-dropping how afraid this [so-called] business of mavericks is of a great film like that,” Penn commented. “One with great, great acting.”
“[It’s amazing] that they too can be as afraid as a piddly little Republican congressman,” he added.
