President Donald Trump took to Truth Social on Sunday to fire back at actor George Clooney, branding him a “failed political pundit” following the Hollywood Democrat’s recent comments on “60 Minutes.”
The “Michael Clayton” star appeared on the news program to promote his Broadway debut portraying legendary journalist Edward R. Murrow, a notable nemesis of Sen. Joseph McCarthy, in “Good Night and Good Luck.”
During the interview, Clooney took the opportunity to attack the Trump administration while discussing his recent New York Times op-ed, in which he infamously withdrew his support for President Joe Biden.
Many believe Clooney’s public rejection of Biden played a pivotal role in the president’s decision to step aside, clearing the way for Vice President Kamala Harris to take the Democratic nomination.

Clooney criticized the Democratic Party for lacking courage and alleged that party leaders had concealed Biden’s deteriorating health.
He claimed that he had no choice but to expose the truth, even if it meant disrupting his own party’s strategy.
When asked whether he would have still published his op-ed titled “I Love Joe Biden. But We Need a New Nominee” had he known Trump would defeat Harris in the general election, Clooney stood by his decision.

“Yeah, I’ll make it kinda easy,” Clooney responded. “I was raised to tell the truth.”
The actor recalled a Hollywood fundraiser he co-hosted in June 2024, where he encountered Biden and was reportedly taken aback by his condition.
“I feel as if there was a lot of profiles and cowardice in my party through all of that, and I was not proud of that and also I believed I had to tell the truth,” Clooney stated.
Despite his criticism, Clooney maintained that he still had a personal fondness for Biden.
“I’ve always liked Joe Biden and I like him still,” he said, though he admitted that Biden’s evident struggles made it impossible to continue defending him.

The actor made similar remarks to the New York Times in February, noting that he “saw someone much less sharp,” at the Hollywood fundraiser than he did the year prior at the Kennedy Center.
During the same interview, he claimed that “The media, in many ways, dropped the ball,” for covering up Biden’s mental decline.
On “60 Minutes,” Clooney also likened today’s political climate to the 1950s McCarthy era, suggesting that the Trump administration has actively sought to intimidate and suppress the media.
“We’re seeing this idea of using government to scare or fine or use corporations to make journalists smaller,” he claimed.
When questioned about how the well-known confrontation between Murrow and McCarthy, which led to the Senator being censured, compared to the current political landscape, Clooney argued that the tension between the press and government was an enduring struggle.
He referred to the ongoing conflict as a “fight for the ages,” nothing that, “you see it happening at the LA Times, you see it happening at the Washington Post.”
He continued, “When the other three estates fail, when the judiciary and the executive and the legislative branches fail us, the fourth estate has to succeed.”
Clooney also referenced Trump’s legal battles with the media, including a $16 million defamation settlement between ABC News and the former president, as well as Trump’s $20 billion lawsuit against CBS.
Trump alleged that “60 Minutes” had manipulated an interview with Harris to portray her in a more favorable light ahead of the election.
Clooney claimed, “ABC has just settled a lawsuit with the Trump administration. And CBS News is in the process.”
The actor did not limit his criticism to just Trump but suggested that all political leaders, regardless of ideology, have a disdain for journalistic scrutiny.
“Governments don’t like the freedom of the press. They never have. And that goes for whether you are a conservative or a liberal or whatever side you’re on. They don’t like the press,” he asserted.
Trump did not let Clooney’s remarks go unanswered, launching a scathing response on Truth Social.
“Why would the now highly discredited 60 Minutes be doing a total ‘puff piece’ on George Clooney, a second-rate movie ‘star,’ and failed political pundit?” Trump wrote.

“He fought hard for Sleepy Joe’s election and then, right after the Debate, dumped him like a dog. Later, I assume under orders from the Obama camp, pushed all out for ‘Kamala,’ only to soon realize that that was not going to work out too well,” the president continued.
Trump also accused “60 Minutes” of distorting Harris’s awful interview before the election, claiming the network had inserted fake responses to salvage her image.
“60 Minutes even fraudulently inserted Fake answers into her disastrous interview, aired just before Election Day, in one of the most embarrassing and dishonest events in broadcast history…” he continued.
“And now George Clooney again? His press agent should be making a fortune!!!” Trump added.
