A prominent Republican senator jumped into the online frenzy surrounding a controversial new ad campaign from American Eagle that’s been lighting up social media feeds across the country.
The woke backlash centers on actress Sydney Sweeney, who fronts the denim brand’s latest ad that some have outrageously likened to “Nazi propaganda” over its perceived undertones about genetics.
The video, which features the 27-year-old “Euphoria” star and the tagline “Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans”, quickly became a lightning rod for criticism following its release.
Liberal critics on TikTok, in particular, have circulated the clip and accused the company of pushing a racially suggestive message by linking physical traits to so-called “good genes.”

The campaign sent shares for the brand soaring by 5% in Thursday midday trading after soaring in pre market trading.

In one ad Sweeney explains, “Genes are passed down from parents to offspring, often determining traits like hair color, personality, and even eye color. My jeans are blue.”
While intended as a play on words, that line ignited fury among some progressive users who took offense at the implication that physical appearance could be associated with genetic superiority.
“The Sydney Sweeney American Eagle ad campaign is just modern day Nazi propaganda,” claimed one user in a post that quickly gained traction. “Like it’s wild how blatant it is. Things are weird right now, man.”
I've lost count of how many Hollywood agents rejected me, saying 'white blondes' are the least in demand.
Sydney Sweeney is undeniably blessed with great genes.

Another TikTok user, sporting a transgender flag in the background of their video, argued, “Should we be surprised that a company whose name is literally American Eagle is making fascist propaganda like this? Probably not. But it’s still really shocking.”
“Like, a blond-haired, blue-eyed white woman is talking about her good genes. Like, that is Nazi propaganda,” the video continued.

Not everyone appeared to be buying into the outrage. Some conservatives on social media shot back at the criticism, calling it yet another overreaction from left-wing activists eager to manufacture controversy.
Paul A. Szypula, a conservative commentator took a shot at the social media critic’s video.
“Of course an overweight woman with a septum ring doesn’t like the American Eagle ad that’s featuring Sydney Sweeney either,” he wrote. “Has any attractive woman actually criticized this ad? Honest question.”
Only one of these is considered a beautiful woman by liberals and it's not Sydney Sweeney pic.twitter.com/N4B4I1OBiE

The controversy caught the attention of Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX), who weighed in on X with his own jab at the situation.
“Wow. Now the crazy Left has come out against beautiful women. I’m sure that will poll well….” Cruz posted, joining the chorus of conservatives calling out the backlash as overblown.

White House Communications Director Stephen Cheung also jumped into the fray, slamming critics and tying the ad’s reception to broader political dynamics.
“Cancel culture run amok. This warped, moronic, and dense liberal thinking is a big reason why Americans voted the way they did in 2024. They’re tired of this bull**t,” Cheung wrote on X.
So it’s okay for Beyonce to show off her blonde hair & blue jeans in a Levi AD.
But Sydney Sweeney does it and the left has a meltdown.
Unreal.
Imagine claiming you’re the party for women & then hating on women. pic.twitter.com/cUbwXPrpbX

Others took aim at what they viewed as a glaring double standard in the treatment of similar advertisements. One user drew comparisons to a recent campaign featuring Beyoncé.
“So it’s okay for Beyoncé to show off her blonde hair & blue jeans in a Levi AD,” they wrote.
“But Sydney Sweeney does it and the left has a meltdown. Unreal. Imagine claiming you’re the party for women & then hating on women.”
Another account added, “Woke advertising is dead. Sydney Sweeney killed it.”
Only in America can a jealous black woman like Doja Cat make fun of a white woman like Sydney Sweeney and give her a hillbilly accent and it not be considered racist pic.twitter.com/uMVNdCR4Qp

Even pop artist Doja Cat couldn’t resist joining the online drama. The pop singer uploaded a parody of the ad Monday night.
In the video, Doja mockingly reenacted Sweeney’s lines with a thick country accent and captioned it “my jeans are blee,” a misspelled jab at the original phrase.
While the firestorm continues online, American Eagle doesn’t appear to be retreating from the spotlight.
Apparently Americans are supposed to be mad that they are now seeing more Sydney Sweeney than ever because of these American Eagle ads.

In an opposite reaction to the backlash, the brand has reportedly seen a nearly 20% boost in its stock value over the past month.
The campaign is being expanded with Sweeney slated to appear on high-tech 3D billboards, including at Las Vegas’ massive Sphere.
The rollout also includes a Snapchat lens and AI-enabled “try-on” features, allowing fans to digitally see themselves in the denim Sweeney wears.
This isn’t the first time the actress has found herself at the center of political outrage.
Sweeney previously came under fire in August 2022 after posting photos from her mother’s 60th birthday celebration, which included guests wearing red hats reading, “Make Sixty Great Again,” a nod to President Trump’s iconic campaign slogan.
Sweeney’s brother, Trent, also shared images from the event, one of which showed a man wearing a Blue Lives Matter t-shirt alongside Sweeney and their mother.

That post in particular became a target for criticism from liberal users who accused the family of harboring “bigoted beliefs.”
Following the online backlash, Sweeney issued a statement attempting to clarify the situation.
“You guys this is wild,” she wrote on Instagram. “An innocent celebration for my [mom’s] milestone 60th birthday has turned into an absurd political statement, which was not the intention. Please stop making assumptions. Much love to everyone and Happy Birthday Mom!”

The attempt to calm tensions only fueled the fury in some corners of social media.
One critic replied, “If you post a photo of yourself wearing a Swastika is it wrong to assume you’re a Nazi?”
“Your family is gross for supporting Trump. Your brother has publicly supported him in the past and your parents obviously do because they wouldn’t wear hats like those if they didn’t,” another wrote at the time.
“Quit enabling and making excuses for the fact that they’re bad people like you.”
