After four years of heavy praise for Jill Biden and Kamala Harris—both gracing the cover multiple times—Vogue Magazine published a scathing critique of First Lady Melania Trump.
After the White House released her new official portrait on Monday, the Vogue hit piece claimed she resembled a “freelance magician.”
Vogue’s fashion writer, Hannah Jackson, described Melania Trump’s black-and-white portrait as looking less like a depiction of a public servant and more akin to “guest starring on an episode of The Apprentice.”
According to Jackson, the photo’s mood and Melania’s attire convey a message bordering on the famous “You’re fired” tagline.
Look at Melania Trump. The most elegant, stylish, beautiful First Lady ever. Will Vogue put her on the cover as they did Jill Biden & M Obama? Of course not, bc Anna Wintour hates Republicans so much she cannot stomach the thought of celebrating this perfect picture of class. https://t.co/esmc8OgP9g

The article didn’t hold back, zeroing in on her choice of clothing. Jackson criticized the former first lady’s Dolce & Gabbana tuxedo jacket paired with a Ralph Lauren cummerbund and trousers.
She wrote that opting for a tuxedo instead of a classic blazer or blouse only added to what she deemed a “boardroom pastiche.”
Jackson continued, saying it wasn’t surprising that Melania, who famously lived in a lavishly decorated “gold-encrusted penthouse,” would bring theatrics into the role of First Lady rather than adhering to 248 years of tradition.

Noting the stark contrast between this portrait and her colorful, smiling 2017 debut, Jackson remarked that Melania’s wardrobe seems to deliver a calculated message.
A message she described as geared toward portraying “wealth” in line with “the coterie of tech CEOs who sat in the front row at the 2025 inauguration.”
Melania’s stylist, Hervé Pierre, who has previously disclosed difficulties in dressing her due to many American designers refusing to work with her, selected a black Dolce & Gabbana pantsuit and white shirt.

The absence of color in the portrait is a notable deviation from other first ladies, who traditionally chose vibrant imagery.
Interestingly, Melania Trump was entirely omitted from Vogue’s pages during her time as First Lady—a break from the magazine’s historical tradition of featuring presidents’ wives on its cover.
Back in 2018, recordings revealed her frustration over the snub. She reportedly erupted, stating, “Vogue said like, oh, we want to do a profile.”
Sometimes, destiny is written in the stars
Did you know that in 1993, at just 23 years old, Melania Knauss now Melania Trump, starred in a commercial in Slovenia 🇸🇮 as a model, where she portrayed, with all the hallmarks, a President of the United States?pic.twitter.com/c7EZKVXoH8

“Profile? F*** you, profile. I don’t need no profile. Yeah, what I need another profile?” she continued. “It might be a cover. I’m like, might be a cover? I don’t give a f*** about Vogue and any magazine.”
During a 2022 Fox News interview, Melania openly labeled Vogue “biased” for excluding her.
“They’re biased. They have likes and dislikes, and it’s so obvious and I think American people and everyone sees it,” she told the outlet.
“It was their decision, and I have much more important things to do in the White House than being on the cover of Vogue.”
Although prominent Democratic first ladies like Michelle Obama and Hillary Clinton graced the magazine’s covers, Republican first ladies, including Laura and Barbara Bush, were conspicuously absent as well.
Media personality Megyn Kelly didn’t shy away from voicing her displeasure with Vogue’s Editor-in-Chief, Anna Wintour.

Kelly accused Wintour of refusing to feature Melania purely out of partisan bias.
“Look at Melania Trump. The most elegant, stylish, beautiful First Lady ever,” Kelly posted on X (formerly Twitter).
“Will Vogue put her on the cover as they did Jill Biden and [Michelle] Obama? Of course not, because Anna Wintour hates Republicans so much she cannot stomach the thought of celebrating this perfect picture of class.”
Doubling down, Kelly later called Melania’s ensemble “literally perfect” and applauded her “elegant” inauguration ensemble.

At the 2025 inauguration, Melania wore a navy blue silk wool coat and skirt by American designer Adam Lippes, complemented by a matching hat crafted by Eric Javits, a celebrated American milliner.
Lippes expressed pride in his creation, stating, “The tradition of the presidential inauguration embodies the beauty of American democracy, and today we had the honor to dress our First Lady, Mrs. Melania Trump.”
“Mrs. Trump’s outfit was created by some of America’s finest craftsmen, and I take great pride in showing such work to the world,” the designer added.
