Kansas City Chiefs’ tight end Travis Kelce said that it’s an “honor” to have President Donald Trump attend the Super Bowl in New Orleans this Sunday.
Meanwhile, his teammate Patrick Mahomes shared that he felt flattered by recent comments from the president in which Trump acknowledged Mahomes’ skills earlier this week.
Following the announcement of Trump’s attendance, the commander-in-chief didn’t hold back, sharing his thoughts about the players on Sunday’s lineup.
On Truth Social, he wrote, “Two great Quarterbacks in this game. Also, an unbelievable running back, and the absolute best tight end in football (Ever!). Incredible coaching!”

“If they would only get rid of that really weird looking new Kickoff ‘deal,’ which actually makes football more dangerous, they would be doing everybody, especially the fans, a big favor,” he continued.
Trump’s Friday post took another turn, including a jab at Joe Biden. “ANYWAY, IT WILL BE A GREAT GAME!!! I’ll be doing the interview, before the game, at 3:00 P.M. There hasn’t been one in four years (Gee, I wonder why?),” he added.
When Mahomes was asked about Trump’s praise on Wednesday, he kept it cool. “I didn’t see that clip, but obviously it’s cool to hear that he’s seen me play football and respects the game that I play,” he said.

“It’s always cool to be able to play in front of a sitting president, someone in the top position in our country.”
Kelce followed up with a similarly diplomatic tone, saying, “It’s awesome. It’s a great honor, I think no matter who the President is. I’m excited because it’s the biggest game of my life, and having the President there, it’s the best country in the world so it’s pretty cool.”
Trump’s comments about Kelce were particularly interesting given his outspoken criticism of the Chiefs star’s girlfriend, Taylor Swift.

After Swift publicly backed Kamala Harris in September, Trump made it known where his allegiances lie.
He praised Patrick Mahomes’ wife, Brittany Mahomes, describing her as a big supporter of his and dismissing Swift unfavorably.
“Well, I actually like Mrs., I actually like Mrs. Mahomes much better if you want to know the truth. She’s a big Trump fan. I was not a Taylor Swift, and it was just a question of time. She couldn’t, you couldn’t possibly endorse Biden. You look at Biden. You couldn’t possibly endorse him,” he stated at the time.
“But she’s a very liberal person. She seems to always endorse a Democrat. And she’ll probably pay a price for it at the, in the marketplace,” Trump continued.
“But no, I like Brittany. I think Brittany is great. Brittany got a lot of news last week. She’s a big MAGA fan. That’s the one I like much better than Taylor Swift.”
Just days later, Trump took to Truth Social again to underscore his disapproval of Swift, bluntly stating, “I HATE TAYLOR SWIFT!”
Over on “The View,” the cohosts weighed in on Kelce’s remarks about Trump and were generally impressed.
Alyssa Farah Griffin shared, “I thought it was pure, totally classy and diplomatic answer, and it’s his big day to be playing.”
“The presidency is bigger than any one person,” she noted. “He is proud that the president of the United States is there; I don’t know that it’s any kind of statement about Donald Trump, specifically.”
Ana Navarro pointed out the possible consequences if Kelce had been less measured in his comments.
“Imagine though, if he had said something about Trump, it would have been taken out on his team, and all the hate that his team would receive as they’re heading into the Super Bowl,” she opined.
Sara Haines supported Navarro’s take, noting that, “Anything else he said would have made it about something else and not about them. He’s dressed in his uniform … you’re representing more than yourself. He made a point of saying, ‘I love this country.’”
Sunny Hostin had a slightly different perspective, interpreting Kelce’s choice of words as a subtle diplomatic statement.
“I’m pretty sure that Travis Kelce knows that [Trump hates Swift],” Hostin said. “He was being a diplomat, and I think he did the right thing by not giving in to this madness.”
Hostin also proposed that the NFL may have altered its messaging to appease Trump. She pointed out that the league had removed “End Racism” from the end zones—a phrase that had been displayed on fields since 2021.
It was replaced with slogans like “Choose Love” and “It Takes All of Us,” a move she claimed might be tied to Trump’s presence at the event.
Discussing the change, Whoopi Goldberg said she found it suspicious, though the NFL denied there was any connection to Trump.
“I think it’s a little fishy and shady,” Hostin declared. She went on to challenge the league’s reasoning, which cited recent major tragedies, arguing, “I don’t know how ‘choose love’ and ‘it takes all of us’ relates to that.” She also firmly stated that “racism is over” sentiments were far from reality.
Other cohosts, like Alyssa Farah Griffin, chimed in to critique surface-level activism. Griffin labeled such changes as “hashtag activism” and called it “lazy,” noting that it didn’t create tangible results.
She referenced NFL commissioner Roger Goodell’s stance that, despite some corporations and federal moves against DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) programs, the NFL remained committed to these initiatives.
Looking to the upcoming game, Trump appeared to hint at his preferred team by congratulating the Chiefs on reaching the Super Bowl while omitting any mention of their rivals, the Eagles.
His friction with the Philadelphia-based team dates back years. After the Eagles’ 2018 championship win, Trump revoked their White House invitation, claiming a lack of attendance interest from players.
The Philadelphia Eagles Football Team was invited to the White House. Unfortunately, only a small number of players decided to come, and we canceled the event. Staying in the Locker Room for the playing of our National Anthem is as disrespectful to our country as kneeling. Sorry!

At the time, Trump tweeted, “The Philadelphia Eagles Football Team was invited to the White House. Unfortunately, only a small number of players decided to come, and we canceled the event.”
Linking the issue to NFL protests, he also condemned players who kneeled during the anthem or stayed in the locker room, describing it as “disrespectful to our country.”
