Professional golf icon Phil Mickelson ignited controversy online Wednesday after calling out Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., over his rejection of the SAVE Act which will tighten voting eligibility by requiring proof of U.S. citizenship.
Mickelson shared a video of Schumer’s fiery remarks on the Senate floor, where the New York Democrat blasted the SAVE Act and accused Republicans of trying to sabotage democracy.
“Donald Trump and Republicans are putting our elections in a vice grip — executive orders from the president on one end, and dangerous legislation from Congress on the other,” Schumer claimed.
“They don’t understand the sacredness of elections and keeping them fair,” he added.
How is this fighting for Americans?
How is letting non citizens vote in American elections a good thing?
It is NOT!
He is not representing America , its citizens nor their best interests. He’s a traitor https://t.co/OavG7OHfnE— Phil Mickelson (@PhilMickelson) May 1, 2025
Schumer doubled down, calling the SAVE Act “one of the most destructive, dangerous voter suppression bills in recent memory. It is very reminiscent of Jim Crow.”
Mickelson, who’s no stranger to political commentary, didn’t hold back in his response.
Posting to his X account, the six-time major champion accused Schumer of betraying the nation.

When challenged by critics online, Mickelson reaffirmed his stance, choosing not to walk back any of his comments.
He clapped back when one responder wrote, “Plot twist. Non citizens don’t vote in federal elections.”
“Then this bill shouldn’t be a problem,” Mickelson sniped. “Those who live in CA are acutely aware of how many non citizens vote and undermine the system and our country.

The legislation in question, the Safeguarding American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act, passed the House earlier this month with a 220-208 vote.
Notably, four Democrats broke ranks to support it: Jared Golden of Maine, Marie Gluesenkamp Perez of Washington, Henry Cuellar of Texas, and Ed Case of Hawaii.
Golden defended his vote, saying plainly, “The right to vote in American elections should be exclusive to American citizens.”
“Requiring people to prove citizenship when registering to vote is a simple way to ensure that’s happening across the country,” he added.
Despite this bipartisan support in the House, the bill faces a steep climb in the Senate.
Schumer made it clear he has no intention of allowing the legislation to proceed.
“Let me be clear: I will not let this noxious bill, the SAVE Act, become law. Every single Democrat is united against it. They need 60 votes. The SAVE Act is dead on arrival,” he declared.
His rhetoric sparked additional criticism from conservatives who argue the bill merely upholds election integrity.
House Speaker Mike Johnson pointed to public sentiment, referencing polling that shows overwhelming support for citizenship checks.
“Polling shows that nearly 90 percent of the American people believe that proof of citizenship should be required to vote,” Johnson said.
“There are few issues in American politics that enjoy that level of bipartisan support. This should pass with a massive bipartisan margin.”
Mickelson, whose career has recently shifted from PGA Tour to the Saudi-backed LIV Golf, has been increasingly vocal on political matters.
In March, he praised tech mogul Elon Musk after Musk claimed significant government cost savings thanks to his actions.
“It’s incredibly kind and generous of Elon Musk to help America become fiscally responsible,” Mickelson posted. “We all owe him a huge debt of gratitude.”

He went on to liken Musk to famed inventor Nikola Tesla, writing, “Nicola Tesla was unappreciated while he was alive despite his numerous contributions to humanity. I hope Elon is shown the appreciation he deserves in his lifetime.”
Musk responded with a simple “Thank you.”
Most recently, Mickelson called on President Trump’s Department of Justice to investigate the PGA Tour after it suspended golfer Wesley Bryan for participating in a LIV event.
Here’s a question.
Normally when an entity violates independent contract law, they deny that it happened and forces the contractor/individual to prove that it did. In this case the PGA Tour blatantly admits they are illegally banning an independent contractor so why doesn’t… https://t.co/hR0OgJbbSH— Phil Mickelson (@PhilMickelson) April 16, 2025
“Normally when an entity violates independent contract law, they deny that it happened and forces [sic] the contractor/individual to prove that it did,” Mickelson wrote.
“In this case the PGA Tour blatantly admits they are illegally banning an independent contractor so why doesn’t [the Department of Justice] step in and enforce the law? Why does the individual have to sue to enforcer [sic] the law? DOJ do your fffing job!”
