Tech mogul Elon Musk took a shot at Microsoft billionaire Bill gates over his ties to disgraced financier and alleged sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein.
At the Bloomberg Qatar Economic Forum on Tuesday, Musk fired back after Gates criticized recent cuts to U.S. foreign aid programs.
Gates had recently accused Musk and the Department of Government Efficiency, which Musk leads under President Trump, of endangering children by slashing funding to USAID. Musk dismissed the allegations outright.
“Who does Bill Gates think he is to make comments about the welfare of children,” Musk said to a live audience. “I wouldn’t trust that guy to babysit my kids, I can tell you that.”

Musk then challenged Gates to back up his claims. “Show us any evidence whatsoever that that is true,” he clapped back. “It’s false.”
The Microsoft co-founder previously claimed that the Trump administration’s rollback of foreign aid, which included Musk’s high-profile reduction of USAID’s budget, was putting vulnerable lives at risk.
“The picture of the world’s richest man killing the world’s poorest children is not a pretty one,” Gates told the Financial Times.
“I’d love for him to go in and meet the children that have now been infected with HIV because he cut that money.”
Gates has acknowledged past meetings with Epstein, the convicted sex offender who pleaded guilty in 2008 to soliciting and procuring minors for prostitution.
Gates referred to those interactions as a “huge mistake,” noting that the relationship yielded none of the philanthropic results he had hoped for.
The meetings, according to Gates’ former wife, also contributed to strain in their marriage. The couple finalized their divorce in 2021.
The Tesla and SpaceX CEO has become increasingly vocal about his role in reshaping government spending.
In February, the Department of Government Efficiency announced it was “time for [USAID] to die,” eliminating large portions of its budget and international programming.
At CPAC, Musk made headlines when he brought a chainsaw onstage in a symbolic show of budget-slashing alongside Argentine President Javier Milei.

A White House spokesperson later defended Musk’s involvement, calling him “a patriot working to fulfill President Trump’s mission to eliminate waste, fraud, and abuse.”
Gates, however, criticized Musk’s approach. In a separate interview with CNN’s Fareed Zakaria, he argued that government reform should focus on efficiency rather than abandonment of aid.
Fareed Zakaria: “Elon Musk choosing, thru DOGE, to cut USAID is a case of the world’s richest man being involved in the deaths of the world’s worse [off] people.”

“When Elon went into government, if his thing really was about efficiency or using AI, you know, of course we need to make the government more efficient,” Gates said.
“If that’s what it had been, then it’s a praiseworthy thing to put his time and expertise (into),” he continued.
“The fact that it turned into slashing these people, I didn’t expect that and some of that should be put back in place.”
According to Gates, the spending reductions have created a “global health emergency” as both the U.S. and European nations reevaluate international commitments.
“I think if you show up and say, in two months, you can cut $2 trillion out of a $7 trillion budget, you’re not going to succeed,” he said.
“So you go for the softest things and things that are overseas, that you can mischaracterize… people that he hasn’t spent any time with.”
While Gates acknowledged Musk’s achievements in technology, he drew a line regarding his impact on global health.
“He’s a genius in some domains … in global health, it hasn’t been a focus,” Gates said.
“If it was a modest cut and a challenge to be more efficient… I’m fine with that. But 80%, that’s going to be millions of deaths and it’s a mistake.”
Musk, meanwhile, indicated he is stepping back from political donations for the time being.
Speaking to Bloomberg, he noted, “I think in terms of political spending, I’m going to do a lot less in the future. I think I’ve done enough.”

Last year, Musk poured more than $250 million into a super PAC supporting conservative candidates, including major investments in a Wisconsin state Supreme Court race that ultimately did not go his way in April.
Asked whether backlash against his companies influenced his new stance, Musk replied, “Well, if I see a reason to do political spending in the future, I will do it. I don’t currently see a reason.”
Despite being deceased since he was found hanging in his New York jail cell since 2019, Epstein recently made headlines when FBI Director Kash Patel and Deputy Director Dan Bongino confirmed his cause of death.
So Epstein Just Happened to K!ll Himself? Bongino Says He’s Seen the File—“He K!lled Himself.
In newly released House testimony, Kash Patel shrugged off doubts saying, “You know a suicide when you see one, and that’s what that was.” Dan Bongino backed it up: “He k!lled himself.… pic.twitter.com/8r6eBkmGUj

While speaking with Fox News’ Maria Bartiromo Sunday, Patel insisted that despite rampant speculation that Epstein may have been murdered at the Metropolitan Detention Center, he really did kill himself.
“As someone who has worked as a public defender, as a prosecutor who’s been in that prison system, who’s been in the Metropolitan Detention Center, who’s been in segregated housing, you know a suicide when you see one, and that’s what that was,” Patel remarked.
“He killed himself,” Bongino chimed in. “I’ve seen the whole file, he killed himself.”
