An embarrassing conversation between former congressman Matt Gaetz and his mother went viral on Tuesday.
The One America News anchor’s candid text exchange with his mom was secretly recorded while he was aboard a commercial flight.
The clip, captured by a nearby passenger and posted by the TikTok account “tidesofmarch,” quickly gained traction for its intimate look at the fiery Republican’s unfiltered thoughts, including his ongoing relationship with President Donald Trump.
The 72-second video, captioned “POV: You’re sitting behind Matt Gaetz and he’s texting his mommy,” shows Gaetz in a blue quarter-zip with headphones slung around his neck, tapping away at his phone while seated at the front of the plane.

What might have been a humorous post took on more serious undertones once the zoomed-in messages revealed what Gaetz was actually discussing.
Among the topics the mother-son pair discussed included President Trump, Iran, television strategy, personal finances, and fatherhood.
The conversation begins with a pointed warning from Vicky Gaetz to her son. “Don’t be criticizing the president or his actions. He’s trying to keep us safe. That’s his job.”
“MAGA will turn on you. You will lose viewership,” she cautions. “Your days in congress are over … Let’s not mess up the media gig.”
She follows up with a more personal appeal, warning, “The president has been a very good friend to you. He hates betrayal. Be smart, not stubborn.”

Undeterred by her concern, Gaetz responds, “I’m trying to guide him, not criticize him.”
“But I’ve never been freer to share my views – and I’ll continue to do so,” he continues. “I think about the people who cheered the Iraq war because they liked Bush. Those people have blood on their hands.”
According to Gaetz, Iran has “been 3 months away from a nuke since 1992,” a remark that seems to reflect ongoing skepticism toward foreign intelligence claims and military action.
In the video, Gaetz’s phone screen is noticeably set to a larger text size, making it easier for viewers to read his messages.
When one social media user pointed out the size of the font, Gaetz replied on X: “My eyesight has gotten very poor in recent years.”
As the footage circulated, Gaetz addressed the situation head-on. “Apparently someone sitting behind me on a flight recorded me without my knowledge,” he wrote.

They found me texting my mother about news of the day, family finances, and working on my laptop.
Please let this be a reminder to everyone to CALL YOUR MOTHER!

“They found me texting my mother about news of the day, family finances, and working on my laptop.”
“Please let this be a reminder to everyone to CALL YOUR MOTHER!” he added.
One of the more interesting parts of the conversation features Gaetz explaining how he communicates with the president: “Guiding DJT always includes a private and public component. I know how to do it.”
When his mother questions his judgment, asking, “How many times do you want to hit the wall?”
Gaetz fires back with a confident summary of his personal life. “I’m a happily married man with a son on the way, two penthouse condos, a 1:1 real estate asset to debt ratio,” he texted. “$500K in my bank account cash.”
That personal milestone ties into another major update from the Gaetz family. On Tuesday, his wife, Ginger Gaetz, made an official announcement on social media that the couple is expecting their first child.
The mom-to-be posted a photo of herself in a white dress, showing her baby bump while Gaetz stands beside her in a black velour sweatshirt, holding their ultrasound image. The caption read, “Baby Gaetz coming 2025.”

The Gaetzs, who were engaged at Mar-A-Lago in 2020, tied the knot the following year in a private ceremony on California’s Catalina Island.
Gaetz stepped down from Congress after a brief but headline-making nomination by President Trump to serve as Attorney General following the 2024 election.
The nomination was ultimately pulled after backlash from several senators, including some within the GOP, over past allegations. Gaetz was never charged with any crime and denied all claims made against him.
In the meantime, the former lawmaker has embraced his role as a commentator on OAN, continuing to weigh in on national security, foreign policy, and Trump-era conservatism—apparently with his mother’s input never too far from reach.
