Host Shane Gillis stunned the audience of ESPN’s “ESPY Awards,” when he told a series of politically-charged jokes on Wednesday night.
Gillis, the stand-up comic whose rise came after being booted from “Saturday Night Live” for politically incorrect podcast content, delivered a monologue so brazen that even seasoned athletes and celebrities squirmed in their seats.
Gillis’ ESPYs appearance marks yet another unlikely career milestone after he was fired from “SNL” in 2019 over racially insensitive impressions.
Since that widely publicized dismissal, Gillis has turned controversy into a launching pad, selling out stadiums, creating his own successful Netflix series, and attempting to revive Bud Light’s image.
Shane Gillis NEVER hosting the ESPYs again OMG
“Joe Rogan wanted me to be here to host this award show so that I could capture Adam Silver because Joe thinks he's an alien…Donald Trump wanted me to be here to capture Juan Soto for the same reason." 😭

Once on stage, Gillis wasted no time throwing punches in every direction. One of the opening jabs involved a joke about illegal immigration and President Donald Trump, who has made headlines recently for his partnership with UFC President Dana White on a fight event slated for the White House lawn.
“Joe Rogan wanted me to be here to host this award show so that I could capture [NBA Commissioner] Adam Silver, because Joe thinks he’s an alien,” Gillis teed up.
“And Donald Trump wanted me to be here to capture Juan Soto for the same reason,” Gillis said, referencing the Dominican-born Mets star.

The line drew a few groans from the audience, prompting the comedian to shoot back, “It’s an alien joke. Who booed? Shut up!”
Turning his attention back to the 47th president, Gillis brought up the infamous January 6 Capitol incident with a biting one-liner.

“The last time he staged a fight in D.C., Mike Pence almost died,” Gillis cracked, referencing Trump’s UFC ambitions and the 2021 riot.
This time, laughter rippled through the crowd. Gillis, grinning, told the room, “You don’t have to do that, it was fine. I didn’t write it.”
Trump, for his part, announced earlier this month during a Fourth of July event in Des Moines that he and Dana White were preparing for what the UFC president described as the organization’s most ambitious fight card to date.
“We’re putting together the renderings. They should be done in the next 10 days, and then we’re going to fly out to the White House and present it to [Trump],” White said on the Spinnin Backfist podcast this week.
UFC at the White House@DanaWhite: “This is a one of one, unique event, that will never happen again, and I will blow the doors off this thing. I’ll make this one of the greatest events of all time… It will be the best card we’ve ever done to date.”

He promised the event would be a “one-of-one unique event that will never happen again.” adding, “It’ll be a full card, and it will be the best card we’ve ever done to date.”
“I will blow the doors off this thing. I’m going to make this one of the greatest events of all time,” White said.
Back at the ESPYs, Gillis continued his verbal rampage with a dig at convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, one that likely rattled a few Disney executives in the process.
“Actually, there was supposed to be an Epstein joke here. Guess it got deleted,” he said with faux innocence.

“SUPPOSED TO BE AN EPSTEIN JOKE HERE, BUT IT JUST GOT DELETED. PROBABLY DELETED ITSELF, RIGHT? IT NEVER EXISTED, ACTUALLY.“

“Probably deleted itself, right? Probably never existed, actually. Let’s move on as a country and ignore that.”
While the Epstein reference drew nervous laughter, it was Gillis’ targeting of the WNBA that visibly stunned the room.
He pointed toward a woman in the audience and quipped, “Four-time WNBA All-Star Brittany Hicks is here, give it up for Brittany.”
Applause followed. But the trap was already set. “I’m joking around, that’s my friend’s wife. I knew none of you knew WNBA players. That’s crazy you clapped for that,” he told the crowd.
In perhaps the night’s most controversial moment, Gillis mocked Caitlin Clark, a breakout WNBA star, with a joke many considered over the line.
"When Caitlin Clark retires from the WNBA, she's going to work at a waffle house so she can continue doing what she loves most: fist fighting black women"

“When Caitlin Clark retires, she’s gonna work at a Waffle House so she can continue doing what she loves most: fist-fighting black women,” he said.
Gasps were audible. Gillis carried on, seemingly unbothered.
He then took aim at NFL legend Bill Belichick, now 73, who recently made tabloid news for reportedly dating a 24-year-old woman.
“A bookie is what Bill Belichick reads to his girlfriend before bedtime,” Gillis said.
“They read, ‘Very horny caterpillar,’ ‘The Little Engine That Could But Needed A Pill First,’ and of course, the classic, ‘Good Night Boobs.'”

The audience erupted in shocked laughter, while cameras caught more than a few grimacing celebrity reactions.
Meanwhile, Olympic gymnast Simone Biles used her own moment on stage to stir the pot.
Accepting the ESPY for Best Championship Performance after securing gold in the 2024 Olympics, Biles made a quip some saw as a jab in her recent social media feud with women’s sports advocate Riley Gaines.
“That was very unexpected, especially in a category of all men. So thank you guys so much,” she said, drawing a roar of approval from the crowd.

Biles had been locked in a public back-and-forth with Gaines, who has criticized the inclusion of biological males in women’s sports.
“I’m honored to receive this award,” Biles said more seriously. “The recognition means more than you guys know.”
“Having a strong support system that understands your dreams, who are willing to show up for you, not just when you’re winning, but when you’re struggling, too, is really important,” she added.
