Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy had a no nonsense reaction when confronted with what some young voters are saying about socialism.
At a recent “Fighting for Our Future” gathering in Washington, D.C., progressive activists openly rallied behind far-left politicians like Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) and New York City mayoral hopeful Zohran Mamdani.
The event featured several Democrat figures, including former Democratic National Committee vice chair David Hogg, known for his anti-gun activism.
One attendee, Reihena Djema, told Fox News, “I think more politicians should be adopting socialism.”
Djema also insisted on the need to be “class-conscious” and to “remove ourselves from this neoliberal idea that it’s okay to do capitalism and exploit workers.”
College student Zainab Chowdry said she finds it “very empowering” to watch Mamdani and Ocasio-Cortez “gaining so much more footing and so much more recognition in the policy field.”
Portnoy, appearing on Fox News’ “Varney & Co.,” didn’t hold back. “It makes me want to puke,” he said flatly.
“These are college kids. They’ve never probably had a job in their lives. They’ve grown up probably coddled, reading books about how the world is, but they’ve never been in the real world.”
The entrepreneur said he’s against “any” form of government that “disincentivizes initiative.”
“Socialism doesn’t work. There’s plenty examples of it. … I just fundamentally have a hard time with a 19- or a 20-year-old … I just can’t have somebody who has been alive for five seconds lecturing me on the ways of the world.”
Mamdani, the candidate drawing much of the spotlight, won the Democratic primary in June in a surprise upset over former Gov. Andrew Cuomo.
He is now leading polls in a general election matchup against independent incumbent Mayor Eric Adams, Cuomo, and Republican challenger Curtis Sliwa.
Portnoy has been critical of Mamdani before. Just last month, he called the candidate “one of the worst, scariest” people running for public office, warning viewers, “I can’t believe that this guy may be the mayor of New York City.”
Labeling Mamdani “closer to a communist,” Portnoy claimed the candidate has openly stated he wants to “put as many socialists in power so he can seize the means of production.”

The Barstool chief said Mamdani “hates capitalism, he wants a fundamental shift in what has built this country, and he doesn’t really particularly hide it.”
Mamdani’s campaign has been clouded by accusations of antisemitism, in part due to his refusal to denounce the slogan “globalize the intifada” and his open support for policies like city-run grocery stores and seizing the means of production.
Portnoy also accused Mamdani of siding with terrorists, citing his 2013 criticism of Boston police for not reading Dzhokhar Tsarnaev his Miranda rights upon capture after the Boston Marathon bombing.
“His reaction to that [the bombing] is how did the police not read this guy the Miranda acts when he’s sitting in a boat, not the people he killed,” Portnoy said.
“This is somebody in a city where 9/11 happened. He’d be quicker to blame the finance people in the building than the people who flew the planes into the buildings.”
Comedian Andrew Schulz has publicly sparred with Portnoy for dissing Mamdani.

“You live in Miami — stop acting like you care about New York!”The comedian didn’t hold back, taking shots at Portnoy’s public takes on NYC. 🗽👀#AndrewSchulz #DavePortnoy #NYC #Miami #Trending #PopCulture #ViralMoments pic.twitter.com/nDLSTVSBxl

Speaking to the show “Breaking Points,” Schulz argued that Portnoy, as a non-resident of New York City, shouldn’t weigh in on the mayor’s race.
“If you’re not spending 51 percent [of your time in the city], you’re not pot committed,” Schulz said. “So just shut the f** up about it.”
Schulz suggested Portnoy’s outrage stems more from Mamdani’s stance on Israel than his socialist policies.
“You’re upset because he said ‘globalize the intifada,’ just make it about that,” Schulz said.
Weird then to turn and say I should stop acting like I care about NYC. If anybody is doing acting it ain’t me https://t.co/Tk6aRyWJ3p pic.twitter.com/XK7qf9Khum

Portnoy responded online by releasing screenshots of alleged private messages from Schulz in which the comedian criticized Mamdani’s economic agenda.
One purported message read, “I hate his policies. Hate his logic. I think he wants to help he’s just wrong in the way he’s trying to help.”
Last week, Portnoy said that the last-place finisher in a fantasy football league will have to do a presentation about former Vice President Kamala Harris’ book.

During his appearance on “Varney & CO.” the titular host showed a clip of Barstool Sports blogger Jack Mac explaining the consequences of becoming the last-place finisher.
“If you finish in the last place in your fantasy football league you will be locked in a room with no phone until you finish reading every single page of Kamala Harris’ new book and then you finish all 500 pages you will be retired to give the entire league a presentation and if the presentation does not pass ChatGPT standards, you will be required to listen to the audiobook for 24 hours straight,” Mac explained.
Harris’ book about her failed 2024 presidential run will drop in September.
“You’re the guy that would, you’d make that happen, wouldn’t you? You would actually do that? You know, that’s cruel and unusual punishment. You know that?” Varney asked Portnoy.
“Some people say there’s no punishment worse than death, I think this one is,” the Barstool founder remarked. “Yeah, this is a bad punishment.”
