Retired late-night host David Letterman criticized President Donald Trump during a recently released podcast episode, responding to Trump’s online remarks targeting comedian Seth Meyers.
Appearing on “The Barbara Gaines Show,” hosted by former “Letterman” producer Barbara Gaines, the former eponymous CBS host reacted to Trump’s criticism by noting he was “proud” of Meyers.
“By the way, a shoutout to my friend Seth Meyers, the president of the United States now wants to fire Seth Meyers,” Letterman began.
“Yeah. And I thought, ‘This is just delightful. How do you think that’s going to go?’ So, anyway, I’ve never been more proud of Seth Meyers.”
Trump had posted a scathing critique of the “Late Night With Seth Meyers” host on Truth Social on Nov. 15.
“NBC’s Seth Meyers is suffering from an incurable case of Trump Derangement Syndrome (TDS),” he wrote.
“He was viewed last night in an uncontrollable rage, likely due to the fact that his ‘show’ is a Ratings DISASTER,” Trump added.

“Aside from everything else, Meyers has no talent, and NBC should fire him, IMMEDIATELY!”

“Aside from everything else, Meyers has no talent, and NBC should fire him, IMMEDIATELY!”
After Trump’s post, FCC Chair Brendan Carr shared the statement on X, leading to backlash from critics who argued the official was improperly using his role to pressure NBC.
Trump and Carr’s comments arrived shortly after ABC suspended late-night host Jimmy Kimmel earlier this year for remarks about conservative activist Charlie Kirk’s alleged assassin.
During the podcast, Letterman joked that Meyers should stay aware of Trump’s reactions, adding, “But just remember, Seth, ‘things happen,’” referencing Trump’s recent defense of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman following questions about journalist Jamal Khashoggi’s murder.
When asked about Khashoggi’s killing last week, Trump responded, “A lot of people didn’t like that gentleman [Khashoggi] that you’re talking about. Whether you like him, or didn’t like him, things happened.”
“But [bin Salman] knew nothing about it, and we can leave it at that,” he added. “You don’t have to embarrass our guest by asking a question like that.”
In another moment on the show, Letterman offered another scathing rebuke of Trump, labeling him a “dictator.”
When Gaines mentioned Trump calling a Bloomberg reporter “piggy” on Air Force One, Letterman reacted, saying, “Oh, how about that? Oh my God, that was so good.”
“Oh man, just a wonder of idiocy. It’s just fantastic. It knows no bounds,” he continued hysterically. “He’s our dictator. He’s not going anywhere.”
On a different channel, Kimmel addressed Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., after she criticized President Trump and announced she would be leaving Congress.
In his monologue, Kimmel praised the new “Wicked: For Good” film and compared its storyline to Greene’s decision to resign.
“People love the story of a witch turning over a new leaf, which reminds me, Marjorie Taylor Greene resigned from Congress on Friday,” he teed up.
“There’s going to be one less puddle of sweat on the floor mat of the congressional gym,” he cracked before saying Greene, once a strong Trump supporter, was experiencing the limits of political loyalty.
Kimmel also noted Greene’s recent disagreements with Trump, including her stance on the release of the Epstein files.
Commenting on the holiday decorations displayed in her resignation video, he added, “I have to say this woman is being attacked from all sides right now. Somehow she still had time to put up her Christmas tree, not even Thanksgiving.”
“She says Congress is beholden to the super wealthy and ignores the needs of ordinary Americans,” he listed. “She says her party has no plan for healthcare and that the Jeffrey Epstein files are not a hoax as the president claims they are. To which I say, ‘Welcome to reality, Marj.’”
Kimmel ended the segment with another joke at Greene’s expense: “Feel free to check out our science wing while you have a chance. And you know what? Congress’ loss is ‘Love Island’s’ gain, and I wish her a lot of luck. Marjorie is out and Mamdani is in!”
I'm curious to see what your reaction is to Marjorie Taylor Greene announcing her resignation from Congress @mtgreenee let her know what you think about the job she did , she'll definitely see this pic.twitter.com/5rpuO3NDWq

Greene’s resignation letter and accompanying video criticized both major parties and argued that everyday Americans are repeatedly used for political gain.
“Americans are used by the Political Industrial Complex of both political parties, election cycle after election cycle, in order to elect whichever side can convince Americans to hate the other side more,” she remarked during the address.
“And the results are always the same. No matter which way the political pendulum swings, Republican or Democrat, nothing ever gets better for the common American man or woman.”
Speculation has circulated that Greene may consider a gubernatorial or even presidential run in 2028, though she has denied such plans.
Meanwhile, on Kimmel’s program, Democratic Sen. Mark Kelly of Arizona dismissed an inquiry launched by Department of War Secretary Pete Hegseth into Kelly’s participation in a video released by six Democratic lawmakers urging military personnel to “refuse illegal orders” from President Trump.

Appearing on the show Tuesday, Kelly and Kimmel dismissed the investigation and questioned Hegseth’s qualifications.
“You have Pete Hegseth, who runs the Department of War, is going to open an investigation into you, I assume into your colleagues. You will have to be interviewed by the FBI. And they’re trying to find what exactly? I mean, what even is sedition,” Kimmel asked.
“Well, this is the investigation because of what Donald Trump said, from what I can tell And I don’t know Pete Hegseth well. I sit on the committee that ultimately had to confirm him,” Kelly shot back.
The video made by the “Seditious Six” was despicable, reckless, and false. Encouraging our warriors to ignore the orders of their Commanders undermines every aspect of “good order and discipline.” Their foolish screed sows doubt and confusion — which only puts our warriors in… https://t.co/UvLXChZnmF

“So I know a little bit about his background. He’s totally unqualified … And from what I can tell, and talking to some of my Republican colleagues, I mean, he just wants to please the president. And this is what he can do this week.”
On Monday, Hegseth called the group of lawmakers the “seditious six” on X and noted that Kelly remains accountable under the Uniform Code of Military Justice, adding that the senator’s behavior will be “addressed appropriately.”
