A photo of California Governor Gavin Newsom sitting tightly crossed at a high profile summit has triggered a well-deserved storm of social media mockery.
Newsom’s appearance at The New York Times DealBook Summit last week prompted a flood of commentary after viewers noticed he was seated with his legs firmly crossed in a testicle contorting position.
The California Democrat quickly became the subject of jokes, memes and questions, with some users questioning how a man could sit that way.
One user reacted by saying, “I have never seen a man crush his testicles harder than this dude,” a comment that circulated heavily across platforms.
Gavin Newsom: Democrats need to be more "culturally normal."
Maybe start by not sitting like that ever again. pic.twitter.com/sWVZtap94Q

Another asked, “Is this normal behavior?” while a third wondered, “How does ANY guy anatomically sit like this?”
In an attempt to address the sudden wave of viral criticism, Newsom’s team posted an AI generated photo of the governor contorted like an impossibly lithe meditating yogi.
The image appeared on X with the caption “Democracy requires flexibility,” which immediately triggered a new round of incredulous responses.

Some users questioned whether Newsom’s team intended to post the image, and one viewer commented, “I’m hoping this account was hacked because there’s NO WAY Gavin would mock himself this bad and hilarious.”
Another user joked, “Gavin illustrating his taxation policy on your average California residence.”

Newsom later reacted by reposting the obviously altered picture with a brief caption that read, “WOW!”
The short remark drew even more mockery from users who continued to savagely weigh in.
One viewer wrote, “We’re laughing at you not with you,” while another replied, “Dude, this is so disturbing and gross.”

The reaction to Newsom’s sitting position was not the only moment that captured attention at the summit.
Actress Halle Berry, who spoke shortly before the governor took the stage, delivered pointed criticism regarding his decision to veto a menopause related bill in two successive years.
“Back in my great state of California, my very own governor, Gavin Newsom, has vetoed our menopause bill, not one but two years in a row,” Berry sniped.
Actress Halle Berry slammed Gov. Newsom for 'overlooking' and 'devaluing' half the population by vetoing a menopause bill she backed—twice:
"That's okay, because he's not going to be governor forever, and the way he has overlooked women—half the population—by devaluing us, he… pic.twitter.com/12S9tGm7uQ

She went on to state, “But that’s okay, because he’s not going to be governor forever, and the way he has overlooked women, half the population, by devaluing us, he probably should not be our next president either.”
The Academy Award winner concluded her remarks by saying, “At this stage of my life, I have zero f-cks left to give.”
The bill in question, titled the Menopause Care Equity Act, sought to expand comprehensive insurance coverage for women experiencing menopause or perimenopause.
It also required the California Medical Board to construct a menopause focused curriculum and direct healthcare providers to complete ongoing education on the issue. The proposal had received bipartisan support.
Following Berry’s speech, Newsom told reporters that he had spoken with her manager and said they were “reconciling this.”
The governor claimed, “We’re getting it fixed,” and said he believed Berry had not been informed that the measure was already included in the state budget when she delivered her remarks.

A spokesperson for the California lawmaker later said that Newsom admired Berry’s advocacy and anticipated working with her further on what was described as a “critical issue.”
“He shares her goal of expanding access to menopause care that too many women struggle to get,” his spokesperson Izzy Gardon stated.
Gardon also said, “He vetoed the bill because, as written, it would have unintentionally raised health care costs for millions of working women already stretched thin — something he’s determined to avoid.”
The spokesperson added that they were confident about collaborating on a version that “can expand access to essential menopause treatment while protecting women from higher bills.”
The exchange also reached daytime television when Sunny Hostin discussed the issue on “The View.”
Hostin defended Newsom’s veto decisions and described them as cost related.
“And, so, in an effort to keep healthcare costs down, he has to veto it because they’re not tailoring the bill, and he has done a lot for women,” she commented.
Hostin continued by saying she knew and admired Berry but disagreed entirely with her position, stating, “I adore Halle Berry. I know Halle Berry. I disagree with her 100% because Gavin Newsom made it very clear that the reason he has vetoed this bill twice is because he’s asking them to tailor it for costs.”
“Remember that, in 2026, healthcare premiums are going to go up to almost a thousand dollars per family,” she noted.
Hostin listed actions the governor has taken on women’s health, mentioning specific reproductive policy decisions and regulations.
“In September, he signed a measure allowing healthcare providers to prescribe abortion medication anonymously,” she listed.
“He requires a state regulated health plan to cover abortion pills regardless of federal approval status. He increased legal protection for providers against criminal prosecution in October.”
Hostin added that he signed legislation establishing safety regulations for various women’s health related products.
During the summit itself, Newsom commented on his staff’s recent posting approach on X, which some observers linked to President Donald Trump’s well known online presence.
“I need to wake everybody up. This is the normalization of deviancy, and it was becoming socialized, normalized,” the governor remarked.

“Call someone the R-word or ‘piggy’ and somehow it’s just Trump being Trump. There’s nothing normal about this. He’s a man-child,” he sniped.
“It’s unbecoming of the President of the United States. He’s dressed up as the pope. He’s acting like he’s Superman. This is not normal.”
Newsom added, “He’s putting his face on Mount Rushmore. . . . This is verbatim what he’s doing. I’m trying to put a mirror to what the hell is going on in this country. This is not normal behavior.”
He said his team’s method was designed to “put that mirror up” and “test some theories” about how users respond to posts when compared with Trump’s online interactions.
According to the governor, the reaction indicated that the strategy was “working.”
