Glamour Panned For Naming Transgender Model ‘2023 Woman Of The Year’

Glamour magazine was criticized for “promoting female erasure” by naming a transgender model one of their seven women of the year.

Model Geena Rocero was celebrated along with the likes of singer Mary J. Blige, actresses Brooke Shields, Millie Bobby Brown, and Selma Blair, amongst others.

Glamour said that the distinction was created to “honor our favorite feminist heroes and game-changers in their field,” which now includes Rocero, who is transgender.

The magazine’s article highlighted Rocero’s experience growing up as a transgender teenager in the Philippines.

Drag performer Tigerlily Garcia Temporosa took Rocero under their gender-bending wing as a young teen and mentored the child to become a transgender beauty pageant competitor.

“At 15 years old she took the highest titles here in the national pageant,” Temporosa told the outlet. “I [was] so proud and so happy.”

“A lot of good transgender [competitors] wanted me to handle them, at that time, with Geena rising as a promising star.”

Rocero competed in both drag queen competitions and those dedicated to gay men, taking home the top prize in the “Ms. Gay Universe” pageant in 2000.

After moving to the U.S., Rocero had the opportunity legally change their gender identity and name, a process unavailable to transgender individuals in the Philippines.

Rocero then pursued a career in the fashion industry as a female model, while not revealing their biological sex to employers.

Eventually, Rocero publicly revealed the truth after having a complete gender reassignment surgery years later.

The outlet also praised the model, as a transgender rights advocate, author, and film producer, who uses “her voice to fight for the rights of the voiceless.”

The magazine was blasted by social media for giving up one of the women of the year slots to a transgender female.

“A man who thinks he’s a woman is on the Woman of the Year cover for Glamour,” wrote conservative commentator Robbie Starbuck.

“You’re actively participating in and promoting female erasure,” someone said on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter.

“Men pretending to be women are men. You are on the wrong side of history. Shame on you.”

“Now they’re just trying to outdo each other with their insane absurdity,” another account added.

“Glamour is saying that women are just not good enough to win “woman of the year” so they have to give it to a man,” someone else pointed out.

Glamour isn’t the first outlet to add a transgender female to a list that has historically been dedicated to women.

Maxim Australia ranked former men’s pro-soccer player and coach, Danielle Laidley, as 92nd on their “Hottest 100 Women” list.

The 56-year-old was arrested in May 2020 for stalking and taking photographs of a woman at her home and work place while high on methamphetamines.

Laidley’s gender identity was exposed by arresting police officers, who shared photos of the former pro-athlete dressed as a woman and wearing a blonde wig during booking on social media.

Laidley pleaded guilty to all charges and got a slap on the wrist of 18-months probation, after the judge admitted that “being outed in a way that was not appropriate,” during sentencing.

Bud Light brand destroyer, transgender influencer Dylan Mulvaney, was just named “Woman of the Year” by LGBTQ+ magazine “Attitude,” and won a 2023 Streamy Award for being a breakout creator.

“My life has been changed for the better but also there’s been an extreme amount of transphobia and hate and I know that my community is feeling it and I know that even our allies are feeling it,” Mulvaney remarked on stage. “You need to support trans people publicly and proudly.”
