President Donald Trump has Democrats fuming after he reimagined the iconic “Apocalypse Now” quote into a warning about deportations in Chicago.
Over the weekend, he posted a meme that featured him dressed as Lt. Col. Bill Kilgore, the character who famously declared “I love the smell of napalm in the morning” in the 1979 war classic.
The president’s version read, “I love the smell of deportations in the morning.”
Democrats from Illinois lost their minds over the meme, with Senator Tammy Duckworth, a former Army helicopter pilot, leading the charge that erupted on social media.
Take off that Cavalry hat, you draft dodger.
You didn’t earn the right to wear it.

“Take off that Cavalry hat, you draft dodger. You didn’t earn the right to wear it. Stolen valor at its worst,” she wrote.
Despite her outrage, Duckworth admitted during an appearance on CBS’s Face the Nation that she had “no indications” Trump was deploying military forces into Chicago, noting only that the Navy provided ICE with office space.
Governor J.B. Pritzker of Illinois echoed Duckworth’s anger. “The President of the United States is threatening to go to war with an American city. This is not a joke. This is not normal,” Pritzker declared online.
“Donald Trump isn’t a strongman, he’s a scared man. Illinois won’t be intimidated by a wannabe dictator.”
Pritzker also reacted by distributing a multilingual “Know Your Rights” pamphlet online.

The pamphlet encouraged residents to demand warrants from ICE and advised bystanders to record immigration arrests.
In a video message, the governor declared, “Authoritarians thrive on your silence — be loud — for America.”
The uproar followed Trump’s earlier posts signaling tougher immigration enforcement.
In August, he criticized Democratic Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson for refusing to cooperate with federal authorities.
Johnson later signed an order barring city agencies from aiding immigration enforcement efforts.
On Saturday, Johnson also reacted online to the meme. “The President’s threats are beneath the honor of our nation, but the reality is that he wants to occupy our city and break our Constitution,” Johnson wrote.

“We must defend our democracy from this authoritarianism by protecting each other and protecting Chicago from Donald Trump.”
Democratic House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries joined in, accusing Trump of waging war against Americans.
“Donald Trump has declared war on American citizens in Chicago. House Republicans remain silent. These MAGA extremists are sick people who are completely unfit to govern,” Jeffries said.
Trump’s allies pushed back. Border czar Tom Homan dismissed the war talk during an appearance on CNN.
“I think his words are being taken out of context,” Homan said. “If I said we’re going to war, we’re going to war with the criminal cartels.”

“We’re going to war with illegal aliens, public safety threats that r**e children, that r**ed citizens, that committed armed robberies, that distribute narcotics that kill Americans. We’re at war with the criminal cartels.”
The clash spilled into Trump’s exchange with reporters while en route to the U.S. Open men’s final.
NBC’s Yamiche Alcindor pressed the president on whether he was “going to war with Chicago.”
“When you say that, darling, that’s fake news. Listen. Be quiet. You don’t listen, you never listen. That’s why you’re second-rate,” Trump shot back.
.@POTUS BODIES @Yamiche for asking if we're "going to war with Chicago":
"You never listen. That's why you're second-rate. We're not going to war. We're going to clean up our cities… so they don't kill five people every weekend. That's not war. That's common sense." 🔥 pic.twitter.com/SJluB8lbyX

“We’re not going to war. We’re going to clean up our cities. We’re gonna clean ’em up so they don’t kill five people every weekend. That’s not war. That’s common sense.”
At least 18 people were shot in Chicago over the weekend, including six fatalities. Labor Day Weekend saw 58 gunshot victims, with eight mortally wounded.
The president told reporters that his intent is straightforward. “Chicago is a very dangerous place, and we have a governor who doesn’t care about crime,” Trump said. “We could solve Chicago very quickly.”
On Monday, DHS made clear that federal enforcement was moving forward.

“DHS is launching Operation Midway Blitz in honor of Katie Abraham who was killed in a drunk driving hit-and-run car wreck caused by criminal illegal alien Julio Cucul-Bol in Illinois,” the agency announced.
“This ICE operation will target the criminal illegal aliens who flocked to Chicago and Illinois because they knew Governor Pritzker and his sanctuary policies would protect them and allow them to roam free on American streets.”
On Monday morning, Trump took a shot at Pritzker over the weekend crime statistics.

“Governor Pritzker just stated that he doesn’t want Federal Government HELP! WHY???” he wrote. “What is wrong with this guy, and the 5% in Polls Mayor. I want to help the people of Chicago, not hurt them. Only the Criminals will be hurt!”
Pritzker fired back after retweeting the post. “I want to help people, not hurt them,” says the guy who just threatened an American city with the Department of War,” he wrote.
As the crackdown unfolded, Trump also found himself at the center of viral speculation after being photographed at the U.S. Open appearing to hold a light-blue tablet in his mouth.

Internet sleuths quickly debated whether the president had been spotted with Viagra, Adderall, or simply a mint. Some pointed to Altoids as the likely explanation.
The White House later confirmed to the Daily Mail that the mystery object was nothing more than “a mint.”
