Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy called out Sen. Bernie Sanders for refusing to congratulate President Donald Trump after the commander-in-chief achieved a peace agreement between Israel and Hamas that halted a brutal two-year war in Gaza.
Trump’s deal, unveiled this week, brought both sides to accept the first stage of his plan to stop the violence and begin exchanging hostages.
The historic accord is already being hailed as a major diplomatic victory for the president and a rare moment of hope in a region long defined by bloodshed.
Still, Sanders chose to focus his attention elsewhere. On the latest episode of his “Bernie” podcast, the self-described socialist criticized Trump, calling him a “demagogue” who scapegoats “powerless minorities” for America’s problems.
Trump is a demagogue.
Instead of addressing the serious crises that working families face, he deflects attention away from them by blaming powerless minorities for our problems.

Sanders accused Trump of feeding into a system where, in his words, “the entire media structure is saying, ‘Well, it’s the fault of the undocumented people. So we’re going to throw them all out and we’re going to make life miserable for them.’”
He added, “That is not only what oligarchy is about, it’s what demagogues do. And that is what Trumpism is in spades.”
Portnoy mocked Sanders for refusing to recognize what he viewed as one of Trump’s greatest accomplishments.
What a funny way to congratulate Trump for negotiating Peace in the Middle East. By all accounts one of the most successful things any politician has done in recent memory and my man Bernie hasn’t mentioned it once. It’s just tough to take anything these people say seriously. https://t.co/M71C3rd6jU

Golf legend Phil Mickelson also chimed in, sarcastically writing, “And thank you for bringing the hostages home and the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas. (you left that part out).”
The ceasefire took effect in Gaza on Friday after Israel’s Cabinet approved the deal to pause the fighting and exchange remaining hostages for Palestinian prisoners.

The Israeli military confirmed that the truce began at noon local time, allowing residents to move freely for the first time in months.
Crowds of displaced Palestinians were seen walking north through Wadi Gaza following the announcement.
Heavy shelling had continued throughout the morning before the guns fell silent shortly after the ceasefire began.
Israeli forces said they had withdrawn troops to the agreed lines as part of Trump’s negotiated plan.
Under the deal, Hamas now has 72 hours to hand over all remaining hostages, whether alive or deceased.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu credited Trump for helping bring the warring sides to this point, calling the U.S. president’s involvement “exceptional.”
“We are in the midst of a decisive development,” Netanyahu said during a cabinet meeting that finalized the agreement. “We could not have reached this without the exceptional assistance of President Trump and his team.
“These efforts, along with the courage of our soldiers who entered Gaza, have created combined military and diplomatic pressure that has isolated Hamas. I believe this has brought us to this point.”
Trump, speaking Thursday from the White House, said his goal was “really peace in the Middle East.”

He told reporters he planned to visit the region “very soon” and noted that the timing and details were still being discussed.
While world leaders reacted to the Gaza deal, attention briefly shifted to Oslo, where the Nobel Committee announced Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado as this year’s Nobel Peace Prize winner.
Many speculated Trump himself might be recognized, given his global peace initiatives, but the committee opted to honor Machado for her “tireless work promoting democratic rights for the people of Venezuela.”
Machado, who has faced death threats from the Maduro regime and remains in hiding, dedicated her award to both her people and to Trump.
“I dedicate this prize to the suffering people of Venezuela and to President Trump,” she wrote on X.

“We are on the threshold of victory and today, more than ever, we count on President Trump, the people of the United States, the peoples of Latin America, and the democratic nations of the world as our principal allies to achieve freedom and democracy.”
According to reports, Trump personally called Machado to congratulate her after the announcement.
Details of their conversation were not made public, but her acknowledgment of his leadership added to the growing international recognition of Trump’s diplomacy.
On Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show,” guest host Josh Johnson surprised his audience by admitting Trump deserved credit for the deal in a rare moment of praise from Hollywood’s comedic circles.
“A peace deal has been reached between Israel and Hamas and it’s based on the framework Donald Trump proposed,” Johnson said. “It doesn’t happen a lot, but I gotta give Donald Trump some props here.”
Johnson attempted to balance the acknowledgment with humor, joking that “if this peace holds, it means the guy who couldn’t stop a fight between Gary Busey and Meat Loaf brokered peace in the Middle East.”
Yet his attempt at levity drew mixed reactions, as the audience booed when he quipped, “Maybe we should give Trump the Nobel Peace Prize?”
