Podcaster Pat McAfee clapped back more than once this week after fans threatened to boycott his ESPN show over an interview with President Donald Trump.
Trump phoned into McAfee’s daily program during a Veterans Day broadcast held before new marines at Parris Island, where the President joined the crowd in chants of “oorah.”
The moment was met with instant backlash from left-leaning viewers who objected to McAfee hosting Trump on what they described as a traditionally sports-focused show.
One critic wrote on X, “I’ve loved watching McAfee every day. I made the assumption that his opinions are different than mine, but he has always said it’s important to keep politics out of sports. Turns out that’s only when it’s for those he doesn’t agree with. Can’t watch the show in good faith anymore.”

Another post read, “All the more reason to Boycott ESPN, Disney and now McAfee.”
McAfee pushed back, laying out why he considered the conversation appropriate for the holiday and the audience.
“I will like to say, though, for the immediate people that are gonna mad about that happening… it’s the President of the United States,” he told viewers.
McAFEE: What does Veterans Day mean to you?
TRUMP: To me, it means taking care of the veterans. And you know, we have a 92% approval rating at the VA. pic.twitter.com/3uvWm28XX3

“It’s Veterans Day. He’s the Commander-in-Chief. Obviously if we have the opportunity to talk to him, we’re going to. And he’s hilarious!”
McAfee also said his team invited former President Barack Obama to appear after Trump agreed to the segment. He explained that Obama’s schedule did not allow for a conversation.
During McAfee’s talk with Trump, the pair covered topics ranging from Veterans-related issues, as well as football discussions including college matchups and the NFL kickoff rule Trump wants revisited.

The President also weighed in on which NFL coach might adapt well to national leadership.
While avoiding naming anyone directly, he suggested that several coaches possess strategic instincts useful in military settings.
“We had the great Philadelphia and he (Nick Sirianni) is some coach,” Trump began.
He expanded on the concept by saying, “I’ve often thought, you know strategy-wise you see some of the good strategy… but you see strategy. I’ve often said we go out and get the best four or five coaches and put them in a room if you are going to war and use them. Because they do it, ultimately it is all about strategy.”

Trump repeated his belief that certain NFL figures could excel in hypothetical wartime planning.
“It is about attack, it is about what angle, give me the angle of attack. I’ll bet you some of these coaches would make great warring generals. I tell you, I would not be beneath doing that.”
He added that his familiarity with championship teams has shaped his view.
“You get five or six of those guys, I know some of them. They come to the White House every year with the winning team, the winning Super Bowl team,” Trump remarked.
“I’ve gotten to know them through that. You wouldn’t lose badly if you did that, I’ll tell you. Tremendous guys, great leaders.”
The following day, McAfee commented again on critics who objected to the interview. He suggested that some viewers attacking the segment were “hating the troops.”
“In my eyes, he’s the leader of the military, and we were celebrating the hell out of Veterans Day,” McAfee stated. “There are people that are certainly not the most happy that that happened.”
WOW: PAT MCAFEE RESPONDS TO PEOPLE RIPPING HIM FOR INTERVIEWING PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP.
“Got a lot of people that don't know what a football looks like telling me they're never watching my show again. I would like to let you know… good! F*CK YOU”

“But what I would like to say, every veteran and military person that I talked to was very grateful and thankful that we spotlighted the heroes of America who walk amongst us.”
“So if you’re against what happened yesterday, I would like to say, you hate the troops,” he added. “And you should go ahead and swallow that and you can take that to where you want to go.”
McAfee touched on some of the messages he received from upset fans planning to boycott his show.
“I’ve got a lot of people saying mean stuff to me. Got a lot of people that don’t know what a football looks like telling me they’re never watching my show again. And I would like to let you know: good! F*** you. Let’s move on.”
In a separate story, reaction to Trump’s public appearance continued when the President attended the Washington Commanders game against the Detroit Lions.
Some fans at Northwest Stadium in Landover, Maryland reacted with boos, though a former Redskins cheerleader argued that the crowd was not representative of the country.

Jillian Anderson told Fox News, “I lived in D.C. for 13 years. When I was younger, I kept a lot of my political beliefs to myself because the area is aggressively liberal and at the time, I was more concerned about confrontation.”
A Trump supporter, she said Washington residents “clearly don’t know what’s good for them.”
Anderson added, “Honestly, I’m not surprised parts of the crowd booed [Trump]. That’s the same city that has repeatedly elected Mayor Bowser.”
She said she connected more with Lions receiver Amon Ra St. Brown, who mimicked Trump’s signature campaign-trail dance after scoring a touchdown.

“I’m from a blue-collar town in the Midwest, and I relate way more to the Detroit Lions player doing the Trump dance,” Anderson remarked.
In her view, “The past 10 months of accomplishments while Trump has been in office have been historic. He just keeps winning for America. I think the majority of the country agrees, and that liberal crowd isn’t reflective of that.”
St. Brown later apologized for the dance during an appearance on the “St. Brown Podcast” with his brother Equanimeous St. Brown.
“First of all, if I offended anyone, I do apologize. I did not mean to offend anyone. It was just, we’re having fun,” he told listeners.
A clip of the celebration quickly circulated online and drew criticism from some viewers.
“If any president was at that game and had a dance, I would have done it. It had nothing to do with who the president was,” the Lions’ wideout added. “We were just having fun, doing the dance. Nothing more, nothing less.”
