A bizarre rumor linking a married Hollywood celebrity and the former first lady prompted the star to speak out about the allegations.
Kumail Nanjiani, 47, addressed claims that he was involved in an affair with former first lady Michelle Obama during a recent appearance on the “So True With Caleb Hearon “podcast.
The “Eternals” star described the rumor as something he did not even know existed until it was brought to the attention of his wife, writer and producer Emily V. Gordon.
Nanjiani told podcast host Caleb Hearon that he was entirely unaware of the online chatter until someone approached Gordon, whom he has been married to since 2007, directly.

According to Nanjiani, the speculation had already been circulating for some time before he ever heard about it.
“There was a rumor going around last year that I was having an affair with Michelle Obama,” Nanjiani said during the episode, prompting Hearon to respond with, “Congratulations!”
Nanjiani laughed while recounting how the claim reached his household, explaining that a shared friend felt compelled to tell Gordon.

“I know, I was so excited. My friend our mutual friend pulled Emily aside and was like, ‘Hey, I heard that Kumail and Michelle Obama are like doing it,’” he recalled.
Nanjiani told the host that Gordon was not distressed by the rumor and that the claim surfaced more than once.
“Multiple people brought it up to me,” he said, suggesting the speculation had spread well beyond a single conversation.
Nanjiani attempted to put the matter to rest by offering a public denial. “I never met Michelle Obama,” he stated, to which Hearon replied, “Okay so no affair, got it.”
Hearon pointied out that during the same period it was alleged that “Friends” actress Jennifer Aniston was having an affair with former President Barack Obama.
The mention prompted a joking response from Nanjiani. “Oh my God. What do we think? Do we think it’s real?” he quipped.
Hearon replied by placing the Marvel star within the same category of internet speculation.
“I don’t know. But what I’m saying is from my friend Kumail you’re up with with Jen Aniston in terms of affair rumors,” the host noted.
Nanjiani dismissed both narratives, arguing that the former first couple was far beyond his own social circle.
He said both Michelle Obama and Barack Obama were in a different league altogether.
“I don’t know. I think Michelle’s slumming it and to be honest, no shade to Jen, Barack’s slumming it too,” he joked.
“I think Michelle Obama is a very high bar to clear. And I love Jennifer Aniston, I’m genuinely a huge fan,” Nanjiani added.
The comments echoed public statements made by Aniston months earlier. In October of last year, the actress addressed rumors connecting her to Barack Obama during an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live.
Aniston described receiving an unexpected message from her publicist about a tabloid report.

“Of all the calls you get from your publicist where you’re just like ‘Oh, no, what’s it gonna be?’” she told the host.
“Or you get an email saying some cheesy tabloid is gonna make up a story and then it’s that.”
Aniston said she was not angered by the story. “I was not mad at it,” she added with a laugh, while also stating that the claim was “absolutely untrue.”
The former first lady may not be having an affair with Nanjiani, despite rumors for marital strife with the former president, but she certainly had her eye on one aging Hollywood legend.
During a recent episode of her podcast, “IMO with Michelle Obama & Craig Robinson,” she made a candid admission about a childhood television crush.
Obama told guest Henry Winkler that she found his Happy Days character Arthur “The Fonz” Fonzarelli attractive.
“Let me tell you who The Fonz was, at least to me,” she said. “First of all sexy.”
“Happy Days,” set in the 1950’s, aired from 1974 to 1984 and became a major prime time success featuring Ron Howard, Marion Ross and Tom Bosley.
Winkler’s character was known as a leather wearing greaser that set him apart from the show’s all American setting.
Winkler reacted with visible embarrassment to the comment. “I’m sitting differently in my chair right now,” he remarked.
Obama elaborated on her perspective as a young viewer. “Now what did I know about sexy at I can’t do the math, but I was young preteen,” she pointed out. “I saw on the screen the coolest, you read tall!”
Winkler agreed, responding, “I did! People would say, ‘Oh my God, I thought you were taller.’”
Obama continued by describing the character as appearing much taller than he was, estimating him as around 6 foot 3 inches and calling him “an even cooler version of John Travolota, before John Travolta.”
Beyond entertainment discussions, Obama has also faced criticism for recent public appearances.
She drew backlash after appearing on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” just hours after her friends Rob Reiner and his wife Michele were found dead in their Los Angeles home.
The couple was later reported to have been killed by their son, Nick Reiner.
Michelle told Kimmel that she and Barack had planned to have dinner with the couple.
“We’ve known them for many, many years. And we were supposed to be seeing them that night, last night, and we got the news,” she said on the show.
she has to be making this up because I refuse to believe a normal person would be on a late night talk show the day after their dinner guests were brutally murdered https://t.co/JFk4FtoCbc

The timing of the appearance led to negative reactions online. “She has to be making this up because I refuse to believe a normal person would be on a late night talk show the day after their dinner guests were brutally murdered,” one user wrote on X.
Another comment read, “I’m struggling to understand the optics. Going on a late night show the next day feels wildly disconnected from the gravity of what happened.”
Obama has also drawn commentary following remarks about women in politics.
During a November stop on her book tour, she discussed the outcome of the recent presidential election, referencing Kamala Harris’ loss to President Donald Trump.
“As we saw in this past election, sadly, we ain’t ready,” Obama remarked. “That’s why I’m like, don’t even look at me about running, because you all are lying. You’re not ready for a woman.”
“We got a lot of growing up to do, and there are still, sadly, a lot of men who do not feel like they can be led by a woman, and we saw it,” she added.
The remarks were later criticized by comedian and HBO host Bill Maher during an episode of “Real Time.”
“Her statement, I was rather shocked by it,” Maher said.

He argued that electoral outcomes reflected individual candidates rather than voter attitudes toward gender.
“To me, this is logical fallacy 101. Just because we weren’t ready or didn’t like the candidates, Hillary and Kamala, doesn’t mean we’re not ready for a woman,” he noted.
“I think it’s a bad attitude. I do,” Maher added. “We said we weren’t ready for a black president, and someone, I can’t remember who, maybe she remembers.”
He concluded his remarks by saying, “Maybe it just has to be the right one.”
