Mario Lopez sniped at at California Gov. Gavin Newsom after a White House post bragged that most Americans are paying under $3 for gas, a claim Californians know does not apply to them.
The TV host and former “Saved By The Bell” star jumped into the debate on Jan. 20 by reposting a White House message stating that “43 states have gas under $3 per gallon,” then adding his own stinging verdict.
“NOT California, that’s for sure…” Lopez wrote on X, instantly lighting up social media feeds already simmering over the state’s stubbornly high fuel prices.
The comment landed as a not-so-subtle jab at Newsom, who has repeatedly promised relief at the pump while backing policies that critics say do the opposite.

Newsom has argued that California’s gas prices are driven by supply constraints and industry behavior, even as he signs regulations tightening control over oil and gas producers.
Lopez’s post struck a nerve, unleashing a flood of replies from users venting frustration over what they see as political mismanagement.
“Not YET we will once @CAgovernor is gone from California,” one user shot back, turning the comment section into a referendum on Newsom’s leadership.
Others piled on with harsher critiques of the state’s political class.
“Because California politicians are deliberately keeping the state in poverty. Idc what these dead beat liberals say, EBT and section 8 is not wealth,” one commenter wrote.
Another mocked Newsom’s international ambitions while Californians struggle at home.
“And clown Newson is at Davos pretending to be presidential material,” the user added.
The gas price backlash quickly spread beyond Lopez’s account, drawing in high-profile voices from the sports world.
Pro golf star Phil Mickelson weighed in after a viral post compared fuel prices just miles apart on opposite sides of the California border.
The image showed a gas station in California charging $5.80 per gallon while a station roughly 10 miles away in Arizona sold the same fuel for $2.80.

“On the left is a gas station in CA, selling gas for $5.80/g. On the right is a gas station 10 miles away in AZ, selling the same gas at $2.80/g,” the user wrote.
“Thanks to Democrat policies, Californians are being legally ripped off on gas. They’re consistently the highest in the country.”
Mickelson responded with a short but pointed verdict, replying “the ‘Gavin effect’” followed by three laughing emojis.

The viral exchange amplified criticism that California residents are paying a premium for policies crafted in Sacramento.
While Californians debated gas prices online, Newsom was thousands of miles away launching a bizarre tirade against President Donald Trump.
Speaking Tuesday in the halls of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Newsom accused global leaders of caving to Trump’s pressure.
“People are rolling over. I should have brought a bunch of kneepads for all the world leaders,” Newsom told reporters. “It’s just pathetic.”

Newsom, who is attending the forum and is scheduled to deliver a speech Thursday, framed himself as a defiant counterweight to Trump on the world stage.
Trump spoke at the event after warning of steep tariffs as part of his push to acquire Greenland for the United States.
The president has argued that bringing Greenland under U.S. control is critical for national security, a stance that has rattled European leaders.
Newsom blasted those leaders as “being complicit,” urging them to “have a backbone” while mocking gestures of respect toward Trump.
🚨 BREAKING: Gavin Newsom has bizarre MELTDOWN in Davos
"I should have brought a bunch of knee pads for all the world leaders!"
"Diplomacy with Donald Trump, he's a T-Rex! You mate with him, or he devours you!"

“This is pathetic,” Newsom continued. “Nobel Prizes, they are being given away. I mean, it’s just pathetic. And I hope people understand how pathetic they look on the world stage.”
He claimed the situation was embarrassing “at least from an American perspective.”
Newsom escalated his insane rhetoric by comparing Trump to a prehistoric predator.
“This is diplomacy with Donald Trump. He’s a T.rex,” Newsom said. “You mate with him, or he devours you, one or the other.”
He warned European leaders they could be “devoured” if they fail to unite against Trump’s pressure.
Trump announced in January that he would impose a 10% tariff on Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the U.K., the Netherlands and Finland starting Feb. 1 if no deal on Greenland is reached.
The president said those tariffs would jump to 25% on June 1 without an agreement, further inflaming tensions overseas.
Asked Tuesday about Newsom’s presence in Davos, Trump struck a more reflective tone while criticizing California’s direction.
“I had a very good relationship with Gavin Newsom when we were, you know, in office together,” Trump told reporters. “I was president. He was the governor of California.”
Trump said that relationship later unraveled. “Somewhere, we just went astray,” he noted “I just hate the way California is being run.”

The president pointed to population shifts out of the Golden state as evidence of deeper problems.
“We actually have people leaving. It’s never happened before, but I hate the way it’s being run,” Trump went on.
He added that their once-close working relationship now appears finished.
“Really, close to the word exceptional, but now we seem not to,” Trump said.
The Davos drama unfolded alongside a flurry of attention-grabbing posts from Trump on Truth Social.
Late Monday, Trump shared edited images depicting a U.S. flag planted in Greenland next to a sign reading “Greenland, US territory, established 2026.”

Trump’s trip to Switzerland briefly hit turbulence when Air Force One turned back toward Joint Base Andrews shortly after takeoff Tuesday night.
White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said the plane returned after the crew noticed “a minor electrical issue” and opted for caution.
Trump resumed his journey later that evening aboard a different aircraft, keeping his Davos appearance on track.
