Savannah Guthrie broke her silence on the moment her 84-year-old mother vanished from her home, publicly laying out a terrifying chain of events that has left her family searching for answers for nearly two months.
The Today Show co-anchor said her mother, Nancy Guthrie, was taken from her bed in the middle of the night, leaving behind her phone, watch, and any sign she left willingly.
The disappearance dates back 54 days, a period Guthrie said has been filled with fear, uncertainty, and relentless questions.
Her mother was last accounted for around 2:30 a.m., when her pacemaker recorded its final sync with nearby Apple devices.

That timestamp now serves as a key reference point in determining when she was likely removed from the home.
The scene Guthrie encountered raised immediate alarm. The back doors stood open, and her belongings remained inside, ruling out any routine departure.
“The doors were propped open, and there was blood on the front doorstep, and the Ring camera had been yanked off,” she told Hoda Kotb, who is filling in amidst her absence on The Today Show.

At first, she considered whether a medical emergency could explain the situation, thinking paramedics might have transported her mother out through the back.
Calls to nearby hospitals quickly ruled that out, forcing a more disturbing possibility into focus. Her brother reached that conclusion almost immediately.

“My brother, you know, he spent his career in the military and worked in intelligence and is a fighter pilot and is brilliant,” Guthrie said.
“He saw very clearly right away what this was. Even on the phone when I called him, he knew. And he said I think she’s been kidnapped for ransom.”
That belief has guided the family’s understanding of the case ever since.
Ransom notes began circulating shortly after Nancy’s disappearance, including messages that demanded payment in Bitcoin.

“I believe the two notes that we responded to, I tend to believe those are real,” Guthrie said.
The emotional toll has been constant. Guthrie described waking up night after night, imagining what her mother may be enduring.
“I wake up every night in the middle of the night, every night, and in the darkness, I imagine her terror,” she said.

The possibility that her public profile played a role in the crime has weighed heavily on her.
“It sounds so — how dumb could I be — but I said, ‘Do you think because of me?’ He said, ‘I’m sorry, sweetie, but yeah, maybe,’” she said, recounting a conversation with her brother.
She struggled to process the idea that someone may have targeted her family because of perceived wealth.
“That would make sense, but that’s probably… which is too much to bear. To think that I brought this to her bedside, that it’s because of me?” she anguished during the interview.
“Can I just say, I’m so sorry, Mommy. I’m sorry to my sister and my brother and my kids and my nephew and Tommy, my brother-in-law. I’m just so sorry. I’m so sorry. If it is me, I’m so sorry.”
Savannah Guthrie shared an Instagram message directed at her mother’s kidnapper, saying it’s “never too late to do the right thing.”

The investigation initially drew attention toward the family itself, as speculation spread that the disappearance could have involved someone close to Nancy. Guthrie rejected that idea and described the pain it caused.
“It piles pain upon pain. There are no words,” she said. “I don’t understand, and I’ll never understand. No one took better care of my mom than my sister and brother-in-law.”
“No one protected my mom more than my brother,” she added. “We love her. She is our shining light, our matriarch, she’s all we have.”
Authorities later released surveillance images showing a masked man carrying a backpack outside Nancy’s home. The photos shifted attention away from the family and toward identifying the individual captured on camera.

She said the idea that the man seen in the images could have taken her mother remains a source of ongoing horror.
“Someone needs to do the right thing. We are in agony. We are in agony,” she said. “It’s unbearable.”
Despite the uncertainty, Guthrie described her mother as a person defined by strength and faith, qualities she said continue to guide her through the ordeal.
“She taught me to be strong, because she taught me to be true, for my faith is strong and resolute,” she said.
Guthrie recalled a moment during the search when she felt a sense of clarity about her mother’s condition, even as the investigation continued.

“As I said to myself, ‘I can handle anything, God, I can handle anything. I just can’t handle not knowing. We can’t handle not knowing. I have to know.’ And I heard a voice. And it said, ‘You do know where she is. She’s with me. She’s with me.’ So whether she’s on this side still or whether she is in heaven, I know where she is. I know who she’s with. But we need to know.”
She has remained with her family in Arizona throughout the search, stepping away from her role on the Today Show.
Her colleagues have continued the broadcast in her absence, while she focuses on finding answers.
Guthrie returned briefly to New York in early March, visiting the Today studio to thank her coworkers and reassure them of her resilience.

“I wanted you to know that I’m still standing, and I still have hope, and I’m still me,” she said. “And I don’t know what version of me that will be, but it will be.”
“I’m holding onto my faith,” she said. “I still believe.”
The family has offered a $1 million reward for information leading to Nancy’s return. The FBI has added an additional $100,000 reward.
Part two of Savannah Guthrie’s heartbreaking interview will air on The Today Show on Friday.
