Julia Roberts urged Americans to breathe through fear while Robert De Niro told Donald Trump to “shut the f*** up” as Hollywood stars staged a First Amendment countershow to the president’s splashy White House UFC spectacle.
The New York City concert gave far-left celebrities their own stage to try to distract from Trump’s spectacular Freedom 250 cage-fighting event on the South Lawn.
Behind the event was the Committee for the First Amendment, joined by No Kings and Indivisible in a pairing that made the anti-Trump message hard to miss.
Roberts, 58, used her time onstage to push a message of endurance and political defiance. The “Pretty Woman” star led the room through a hope-over-fear message.

“We all feel like, “I can’t turn the news on, I don’t want to hear it,”” Roberts told the crowd. “But we have to hear it; we have to face it. But if we keep inhaling and exhaling, we will prevail.”
Roberts then turned to Renee Nicole Good, the 37-year-old American killed during a Jan. 7 ICE operation in south Minneapolis.
The Department of Homeland Security has said the shooting happened after Good allegedly drove at agents during an arrest operation and a federal agent fired in self-defense.

Roberts framed Good not as a political agitator, but as a person. “Renee Nicole Good is not a symbol,” Roberts told the audience.
“She is an American woman, a queer woman who was doing the very best she could do to be good in an unjust world.”

Other names on the bill included Jane Fonda, Joy Reid, Ayo Edebiri, Tessa Thompson, Lily Gladstone and Patti Smith.
Fonda, who helped revive the Committee for the First Amendment, argued that the threat to free expression was not isolated to one branch of government.
“This isn’t the first time that Americans’ rights have come under attack,” Fonda remarked. “But this time, what is really different from the last century is that the attacks are coming from every part of the government: the executive, the legislative, and the Supreme Court.”
Fonda: The government and its cronies are routinely violating the First Amendment to silence artists, shuttering institutions like the Kennedy Center, and canceling TV hosts who speak out.

Fonda reached back to the 1950s blacklist era for her sharpest comparison. “I think the Un-American Activities Committee right now is coming from the White House,” Fonda told the crowd.
Fonda claimed “hundreds of thousands” had registered for watch parties, though the YouTube listing for “Rise Up, Sing Out” showed just over 205,000 views by Tuesday morning.
The most hysterical attack of the evening came from De Niro, who opened with a jab at Trump’s cage-fighting event.
“Welcome to all of you who couldn’t get tickets to the White House cage fight,” he cracked.
The Trump-hating Oscar winner then presented his own view of free speech. “When I hear something I don’t like, I use my own free speech to respond,” De Niro said.
“Let me give you an example: when I hear Trump say, as he did a few days ago, “I don’t care about Americans’ financial situation, not even a little bit,” I say, “Shut the f*** up.””

De Niro used the Kimmel controversy to explain why patriotic unity language no longer sat right with him.
“The phrase, ‘We all love our country,’ stuck in my throat,” De Niro told the audience. “Because our country isn’t so lovable right now. I hate to say it, but loving our country is starting to sound like an abused spouse saying they love their abuser.”
He rattled off the reasons he said he could not embrace the country under Trump.
“I can’t love a country that starts stupid and inhumane wars, killing thousands of innocents and indirectly causing the deaths and suffering of millions more,” De Niro said.
“I can’t love a country that takes healthcare away from millions of people and uses that money to enrich their pals in the Trump-Epstein class.”
The actor then turned his fire directly at Trump and Congress. “I can’t love a country that sends out masked militias to shoot citizens in the streets, torture our neighbors, and separate families,” he droned on.
“I can’t love a country that’s led by a racist, misogynist, xenophobic tyrant. And let me just say it: I can’t love the country that’s led by Donald Trump and his sycophant Congress.”
The White House answered through spokesman Steven Cheung, who tore into De Niro in comments to Fox News.
“Robert DeNiro is a washed-up has-been who hasn’t been relevant in 30 years,” Cheung stated. “Now, he just beclowns himself by spewing hate speech and inciting violence against others.
“Instead of embarrassing himself every time he speaks, he should seek immediate treatment for a debilitating case of Trump Derangement Syndrome that has rotted his peanut-sized brain.”
Kimmel also mocked Trump’s birthday by parodying the disputed Jeffrey Epstein card that the president has denied writing.

His Instagram post used a crude Trump torso sketch and borrowed phrasing from the disputed Wall Street Journal card.
“Happy 80th Donald! A pal is a wonderful thing. Happy Birthday and may every day be another wonderful secret,” the mock message said. Kimmel captioned the post, “Happy #80 @realdonaldtrump.”
White House spokesperson Davis Ingle dismissed him in a statement. “The seriously unfunny Jimmy Kimmel might be the dumbest and least talented television host in history,” Ingle replied.

Hillary Clinton used the UFC event to push “our house” merchandise, arguing that the White House did not belong to Trump.
Conservatives quickly threw the Clinton era back at her. Rep. Tim Burchett, R-Tenn., pointed to the Lincoln Bedroom and former President Bill Clinton’s Oval Office scandal with Monica Lewinsky.
“They literally rented out the Lincoln Bedroom and don’t forget Bill’s activity in the Oval Office,” Burchett said. “The vandalism that went on when you left was also well-documented.”
The official Republican Party account offered an even shorter reply, suggesting Clinton “sit this one out.”
