Country stars Luke Bryan and Jason Aldean turned a White House stop into a pretend briefing-room act, and liberal critics pounced when the Trump team treated the country stars like possible stand-ins for Karoline Leavitt.
The joke came with an actual vacancy on the way.
President Donald Trump has said Leavitt will leave the White House press secretary job at the end of August, giving Bryan’s appearance behind the podium a ready-made setup when the Trump team posted video from the visit on Instagram.
“@lukebryan heard that there is an opening for Press Secretary 🤣 @karolineleavitt,” the account wrote.

Bryan and Aldean were in Washington, D.C., for their co-headlining “Double Down Tour” show at Nationals Park before heading into the briefing room Thursday with Brittany Aldean and others.
Aldean stepped aside so Bryan could take the microphone, while people in the room smiled through the bit.
The “American Idol” judge then acted as though he was handling questions and landed on a bizarre agriculture punchline.

“I think the screwworms are screwed,” Bryan said.
He followed it with a more technical-sounding answer about the pest fight.

“We’ve immobilized sterile male flies,” Bryan said, before pointing at a woman who applauded him. “See! I’ve been listening to our conversations!”
New World screwworms are parasites that threaten livestock, and sterile flies have been part of U.S. Department of Agriculture work to curb their spread.
Bryan reportedly met with Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins while in Washington and also spent time with Vice President JD Vance before he and Aldean visited the briefing room.
Viewers who disliked the gag said the singers had turned a serious job into celebrity playacting.
“Could either Luke Bryan or Jason Aldean actually handle the press secretary job? They should put some respect on that role!” one person wrote.
Another viewer suggested the standards for the podium had fallen.
“At this point, anyone can stand behind the podium. The only qualification is being able to lie with a straight face,” the critic said.
A former fan said the visit made the two country stars harder to support.
“I used to love them both. Just makes me sad that they would support this administration,” the person complained.
Another post called Trump’s White House the “Least serious administration in these most serious times.”
“Until we get them out, the US is truly f***ed,” the viewer added.
Leavitt’s exit announcement gave the online joke its real-world hook, but the outgoing press secretary framed her decision around family.
Trump praised her on Truth Social as one of his most trusted aides and said she was leaving to spend more time with her young children.
“Our wonderful White House Press Secretary, and one of my most trusted aides, Karoline Leavitt, will be departing her role at the end of the month so she can spend more time with her beautiful young children and family,” Trump wrote, calling the move “a decision I totally understand and respect!”
Leavitt, who recently returned after giving birth to her second child, was 27 when she became the youngest person to serve as White House press secretary.
Trump said she would remain one of his top outside advisers.
Leavitt called the move a “bittersweet decision” in a Wednesday post on X, saying her role as a mother and the demands of the briefing-room job could no longer both receive the full commitment they required.
“Being a mother and welcoming a new baby while working in one of the most demanding jobs in the world has been the most rewarding yet challenging season of my life, to say the least,” Leavitt wrote.
Since coming back to the White House after her daughter’s birth, Leavitt said, she felt she could not be “the best mom” her two children deserved while also giving the job the “constant time, energy, and attention” required.
Trump also put himself into the replacement chatter Thursday night.
The president posted an AI image of himself addressing reporters from the briefing room and captioned it, “The Best Press Secretary.”

He added other images that night, including one showing him bringing back the Keystone XL pipeline and another placing an outline of his face in the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool.
The actual search has produced a mix of Trump-world names, odds and denials.
Former U.S. Attorney Alina Habba had a 35% chance on Kalshi before knocking down the idea that she was in line for the position.
“Flattered by the Kalshi odds, but I’m not in the running for any job,” Habba posted on X.
She joked that if she were getting another role, she wanted the unnamed sources to tell her first.
“Fake news remains the undefeated champ…well…until I come at them,” Habba wrote.
Habba had also addressed similar chatter after Trump’s 2024 election victory, saying she was “flattered” by the consideration but thought she would “be better served in other capacities.”
After Habba’s denial, CNN political commentator Scott Jennings became the betting favorite on Kalshi, followed by Leavitt’s deputy, Anna Kelly.
Jennings, a former aide to President George W. Bush, had also been discussed for the job after Trump won in 2024 before Leavitt was chosen.
Trump has promoted Jennings’ recent book and called him a “patriot” who “gets it,” but insiders say the president has repeatedly indicated that he would prefer a woman to replace Leavitt.
Semafor and CNN have reported that Trump is not hurrying the selection.
Sources said plenty of hopefuls have been trying to work White House staffers for support, but the lobbying may run through aides while the hiring power remains with Trump.
