Nicki Minaj might have a new gig waiting for her at the White House, at least if President Donald Trump’s communications director gets his way.
The Grammy-nominated rapper found herself at the center of a mock job interview aboard Air Force One on Sunday, with White House communications director Steven Cheung joking that the administration had found its next press secretary following two recent departures from the position.
“Ladies and gentlemen, I think we may have found the new White House Press Secretary! Nicki Minaj,” Cheung wrote on X alongside a video of their exchange.
The official White House account joined in by replying with an eyes emoji.

In the roughly two-minute clip, Cheung sat across from Minaj and fired off questions about Trump’s economic record, work ethic and leadership, giving the outspoken celebrity supporter an opportunity to praise the president before the two traveled to a campaign rally in Michigan.
“Well, we have a president who understands economics, first of all,” Minaj said when asked about the economy. “If he can do that himself, with his own finances, surely he knows what to do with the country.”
Asked whether anyone works harder than Trump, the “Super Bass” singer had a two-word answer: “Absolutely not.”

She praised his schedule and willingness to campaign for other Republicans, describing him as someone who could spend the remainder of his presidency relaxing but instead chooses to help his party.
“He wakes up at 4 o’clock in the morning,” Minaj said, according to the supplied account, adding that Trump works harder than people half his age.

“He’s thinking about the other Republicans that have to win during these elections, and so that tells me that he’s a great guy.”
Minaj also praised Trump’s approach to foreign affairs, saying he pushes other countries to consider American interests.
“He’s tough internationally. He tells them what we need, not what they need,” she said.
The mock interview came during a turbulent period for the White House press operation. Karoline Leavitt departed as press secretary in August, and Trump subsequently selected conservative commentator Katie Zacharia to take over earlier this month.
Zacharia lasted just five days in the position. Her only press briefing ended after questions from three reporters, although her departure was described as amicable and she was reportedly being considered for another White House role.
There was no indication that the exchange with Minaj represented an actual hiring announcement.
Minaj also referred to Trump as a president who had won three elections. Trump won in 2016 and 2024 but lost the 2020 election to Joe Biden, despite continuing to claim that the contest was rigged.
The Air Force One appearance was only part of Minaj’s Sunday with Trump.
She accompanied the president to Port Huron, Michigan, where he was campaigning ahead of the November 3 midterm elections, and later joined him onstage at the McMorran Place Sports & Entertainment Center.
Near the end of his nearly two-hour rally, Trump welcomed the rapper as a “special person” and the “Queen of Rap.”
Minaj opened her remarks by leading the audience in a “We love Trump” chant before praising the president’s influence on his supporters.
“He represents resilience, you know,” she told the crowd. “So many people were maybe giving up a little bit, a little bit hopeless, and since he’s come back, he’s changed the energy of our country, and he’s given us a future to look forward to — a brighter future for us and our children.”

The rapper also urged voters to support Republican candidates Rogers and James, leading chants for both before encouraging Michigan residents to vote.
Her remarks turned to issues involving children and gender transition as she told the crowd, “We don’t want our children to be bombarded with sex changes.”
“We want people to leave the children alone, leave them out of it, right?” Minaj continued, before telling Trump she would support him even if he sought office again.
Ahead of the rally, Minaj had described the midterm elections as particularly important in a statement to the Washington Examiner, arguing that Republicans needed to maintain a strong congressional team for Trump’s final two years in office.
She pointed specifically to Trump Accounts, a program she had previously promoted while appearing with the president at a January Treasury Department summit.
At that event, Minaj said financial opportunities for children without wealthy families could change their prospects.
“If I had access to something like this, my whole life would be different,” she said.
Minaj’s increasingly public political involvement followed a reported falling-out with California Gov. Gavin Newsom. After saying she had received a cold reception from the governor, she reached out to Trump’s communications team and subsequently developed a closer relationship with the administration.
By September, she was encouraging younger Americans to become more involved in elections during an appearance on “My View with Lara Trump.”
“Now is not the time to think that your voice will not be heard,” Minaj said, urging viewers to participate in local contests as well as presidential elections.

She eventually made her partisan preference explicit, telling young voters, “Please, and vote red now.”
During the interview, the rapper also explained what she admired about Trump’s public personality, calling him “a very authentic person” and praising his unscripted approach to speaking.
“He brings this candid, unedited vibe to the White House that we’ve never before seen,” Minaj told Lara Trump.
She also made clear that her political support was not something she intended to hide.
“I’ve made it my mission to be someone that supports him,” Minaj said.
