Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) made the internet melt down on Sunday night, after she told 60 Minutes interviewer Lesley Stahl that President Joe Biden and the Democrats are “pedophiles.”
Woke Twitter has been going insane since the interview was announced by Twitter on Friday afternoon, with threats of boycotts of the CBS show for having the gall to “give someone so full of hate and threats a platform to further their agenda.”
“Will NOT be watching 60 Minutes this Sunday now,” one person replied to the promo. “Thanks for the heads-up.”
“Your show has been heading downhill for a while. Your “journalists” are lightweight reporters who should be on a docuseries about nothing,” someone else accused.
“You want to destroy the United States for profit. You will never be on my TV again,” they concluded. “#Boycott60Minutes.”
One even threatened to drop parent company Paramount’s streaming service over the episode, and the help desk hilariously took them up on the offer.
“Looks like I won’t be watching 60 minutes. Time to cancel my @paramountplus account as well,” somebody tweeted.
“We’d be happy to help. Can you please DM your ZIP code, first & last name, and the email associated with your subscription, so we can locate your account?” The Paramount+ Help account replied.
During Sunday’s episode, MTG infuriated woke Twitter after Stahl prompted her to explain her own quote from another interview, when she said Democrats were “the party of pedophiles.”
“I would definitely say so,” Greene said without hesitation. “They support grooming children.”
“They are not pedophiles,” Stahl protested. “Why would you say that?”
“Democrats support– even Joe Biden, the President himself, supports children being sexualized and having transgender surgeries,” Greene replied.
“Sexualizing children is what pedophiles do to children.”
The interviewer was visibly shaken by the explanation, and muttered out a shocked, “Wow,” after a brief pause.
“But my question really is can’t you fight for what you believe in without all that name-calling and without the personal attacks?” Stahl pressed.
“Well, I would ask the same question to the other side, because all they’ve done is call me names and insult me non-stop since I’ve been here, Lesley,” Greene shot back.
“They call me racist. They call me… anti-Semitic, which is not true. I’m not calling anyone names. I’m calling out the truth basically.”
The liberal internet was not amused by the conservative congresswoman’s remarks, or Stahl’s refusal to press her harder on the topic.
“I mean, I don’t want to be too critical here, but maybe someone at CBS could have seen that coming and have a follow-on question written up,” a staff writer at The Atlantic pointed out.
“MTG tells Leslie Stahl that democrats are pedophiles and she says NOTHING in return,” someone replied to him.
“What a horrible interview. It as more like a campaign promotion for MTG. Retire Leslie.”
“The entire Democratic Party should sue MTG for slander and defamation, based on her comment on ’60 Minutes’ that the Democrats are “pedophiles,” one person wrote.
“Individuals like Marjorie Taylor Greene get away with lies, insults and dangerous rhetoric like this by hiding them behind the words “free speech,” an angry Twitter user spat.
“She represents a portion of the population. There MUST be accountability for irresponsible remarks.”
In another clip Stahl read off some of the names people have called Greene, but the Republican lawmaker simply shrugged it off.
“Crazy, Q-clown, Looney Tune, unhinged, moron,” she read. “Pretty ugly stuff.”
“Looks like the average troll in my Twitter feed, so I don’t really care,” Greene remarked.
“I don’t let name calling bother me, or offend me, I just don’t.”
Stahl asked how much Greene had deliberately “styled” herself after Trump, and noted that people referred to her as “Trump in high heels.”
MTG said that it wasn’t intentional on her part, but she could understand why people compare them, as they both come from construction backgrounds and have a similar “plain-speaking style.”
Stahl interjected that both of them tend to go on “attack mode” when they speak.
“Yeah .. but I think our government deserves it,” she concluded. “They don’t really deserve to be respected that much.”
